Nigel Howe says...

by Barry the bird boggler » 15 Nov 2007 14:46

I can't see this anywhere else unless its hiding in another thread somewhere but just thought you'd like to know that the clubs ambition is now to become a Top 10 Premiership club (note no mention of timescales though)

http://www.readingfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10306~1168398,00.html

Royals' Chief Executive Nigel Howe believes that Reading FC has the potential to become one of the ten biggest clubs in the country.

In an exclusive blog for readingfc.co.uk, Nigel wrote, "We have come a long way, but it's crucial that we keep on progressing and developing, and we believe that this club still has a great deal of potential for further growth that has not yet been fulfilled.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are out on their own as the biggest clubs in the country. Behind them, clubs such as Newcastle, Everton and Tottenham enjoy a greater status than we can aspire to in the short or medium term.

But beyond that, there is potential for us to become as big as anyone, and we believe that aiming to become a top ten club, both in terms of league position and stature, is a realistic target for Reading Football Club.

Nigel added that we benefit from "possibly the best location out of any professional club in the country... and this location, along with the potential development of Madejski Stadium into a 38,000 capacity venue, means that we are focussed on continuing our growth."

He concluded, "For years, our mission was to become a Premier League club. Now that objective has been achieved, we have set our sights on a new ambition - to become a top ten Premier League club."

Nigel....football is played on the pitch mate, and as long as half our team belongs in the Championship we will never rival those clubs you mention, sorry to burst the bubble of big club bullshit.

If only Howe had said 'We're not sure what we want to be really, perhaps we'll muddle alomg for another season or two and then get relegated. Who knows...'

Would Mr PArtridge have been happy ?

Frankly what Howe says is what you'd expect him to say - they want to move up a level from where they have now got to.

I don't doubt they have ambition or the way they go about it, but this nonsense doesn't need to be out in the open. Reading will never be as big as some of those clubs mentioned, so what if we have 38,000 seats soon, they will rarely be filled IMO, when we just about manage to sell out 24,000 I could see us getting around 30,000 ish for the big games? Do we have another 14,000 fans just waiting to get through the door? No, IMO.

Reading HAVE to spend big to try and compete with those clubs named, need some names here and need to go forward and replace half our current team if they are to rival those clubs in the short- medium term. That's not going to happen - probably rightly so. So why spout this sort of talk?

He does...

And you could probably put a decent arguement in favour if you defined your terms well enough. I don;t think he's meaning how many pubs there are nearby.

Quite right. It's no good just having a stadium to rival those clubs, you have to have a squad as good as theirs too.

They talk about the need and intention to strengthen the squad and they talk about their plans to expand the stadium. Notice any similarities?

They have yet to start implementing those plans and aren't giving definitive timescales for doing so. Planning consent = budget to buy new players!

Yes they are, January is the time they want to start supplementing and this summer is when they want to start the expansion. It's in the bloody headline.

Reading getting 20,000 was feasible. Most clubs getting that isn't beyond the realms of possiblity. Do you HONESTLY think Reading v Middlesbrough would ever attract 38,000 spectators for a league match?

Why use the one of the least attractive games as your Benchmark?

It makes zero sense to do so.

You think if an upper and lower limit.

Upper limite 38,000 lower limit probably somewhere around what we are filling week in week out now. About 20,000.

If we can attract 20,000 fans to he least attractive game this season logic follows we can attract more for the more attractive games. How many more i s unknown. that's why the club isn't going straight up to 38,000 immediately.
