Sunderland Penalty

by The 17 Bus » 22 Dec 2007 17:59

Was it just me or did Sonko get the ball away, then Jones went down over his legs?

That's how I saw it, was in line with it and it was never a penalty.

A penalty that never was and a goal that maybe wasn't.... net effect 1-0 win

Guessed you would have had a good view from your seat, so had the second not gone in we would all have been complaining about the penalty.

Dirk Gently texted BBCRB saying it was never a penalty and was in agreement with the first post.

Looking forward to MOTD. :D

Aye - Sonko certainly won the balland then Jones swallow-dived over his outstretched leg.

Very like the one against Liverpool whgere Sonks won the ball - and that was was correctly not given.

Sonko not quick enough across and caught him with the trailing leg I thought. Is he not match fit yet or has he lost a yard of pace?

Couldnt get a great view from the North although it looked like he got the ball
I went with reputation though and assumed it was just a clumsy challenge

Hopefully it wasnt a penalty and our goal didnt cross the line so we're all even :)

Watching on Setanta Broadband I must have seen it about four or five times on slow mo. It appeared to me that Sonko was going to get the ball when Jones toe-poked it away from him. So Sonko missed the ball, by a fraction. Then Jones went flying over him knowing that a penalty might be the best outcome. Sonko got him with the slightest of touches.

If Sonko gets the ball, then no way it was a penalty, but because Jones pushed it away from him I think you can argue that it was a penalty. Watch it again tonight on MOTD and post back here and let me know what you think.

Hate to say it, but I thought it was a pen (sat directly in line in East Stand Y25), Jones doing the old Hunty trick of edging the ball past the defender and 'drawing' the foul. Sonks has been living dangerously with his tackles in the past two or three games - get that extension a split second late and it's a nailed on foul. And it almost cost double, because Ingimarsson was scared to make a challenge a couple of minutes later in a similar situation, leaving Jones one on one with USA (who had a second blinder in a row for the first time since.....ever?).

By the way, my son went for a pee in injury time and saw Hunt's goal on the TV screen - he reckons MoTD will settle the argument as it was clearly over the line. We shall see...

Yeah it was a Pen, the Sunderland player was a little bit too quick for Sonko.

I can confirm (as i am in Australia and wached it on ESPN!) that Sonko's challenge was stupid...BUT Jones dived and sonko did not even make contact with him

From the East stand it looked to me like a pen, Sonks just beaten to the ball by Jones.

I'd really like to see the last goal on MOTD and have the lino who gave it vindicated, and whinging (the whole world is against us) Keane exposed as the crap, moaning, bad losing git he is.

Poor tackle, but Jones dived with no contact at all from Sonko, you all will see on MOTD

Armadillo Roadkill Again, from the East Stand, a penalty.

Likewise. Normally I would be giving the officials real stick when they award a penalty against us but on this occasion felt there could be no argument at all.

I didn't see it or anything, but based on various factors I think it wasn't a penalty.

Given the fact that Reading's 1st goal shouldn't have been a free kick and there is an ongoing thread regarding the winner, an obvious penalty means that was the only clear-cut goal of the game.
