If club A offered £3m, then we'd pressumably accept £3m from club B (supposing they're not a direct threat to us, but even then we'd probably accept).

We can't go back to them and say "We're sorry, but we've received a bid that is higher than yours. We'll have to withdraw our agreement to sell you the player, unless you'd like to match it?"
