The centre back problem

by Focher » 30 Nov 2009 12:26

I know this has been touched upon in quite a lot of threads.

Surely if we have faith in our own scouting policy and the money we reluctantly spend, Pearce and Ingimarsson should not be playing.

Pearce - League 1 standard, basic with no pace.
Ingimarsson - Quite obviously way past his best since the Injury

O'Dea - Played in the Champions league within the last 2 years
Mills - £2m investment, surely he was good at some point at Doncaster!

Surely 'on paper' it a no brainer????

No No, Pearce is the next John Terry, remember?

Pearce is best in the squad at reading the game, organising and heading, Mills is the best in terms of strength and pace - play these two.

Pearce will never progress unless he plays, though .....

I have wanted an O'Dea and Mills partnership for quite a while. More pace, more strength, more height.

...but unfortunately no future beyond December as O'Dea will presumably head back to Scotland especially as he has not been getting games here which was the whole point of him joining us on loan.

I presume Rodgers will be looking for another centre back in January if O'Dea goes so lets hope he finds someone who will get into the first team and strengthens are weak backline.

Then again this is RFC we're talking about.

It should have been those two from the outset (once Mills had got fit) and then that would have given us a good chance of being able to extend O'Dea's loan to the end of the season. Not much chance of that now meaning they will have to go out and get someone else.

He's a better footballer than Ingimarsson. Next game go and count up how many times he gives the ball away compared to Ivar.

Hasn't O'Dea got other problems he's sorting out atm? Not sure why Mills isn't being used though.

But Pearce can only get better as time passes and he plays more games, and Ivar can only get worse....... at what point the two lines on the graph cross (if they haven't already) is a subjective thing.

Bl00dy Hellfire what have you got against Ivar? he's coming back from a long term injury. He's going to make mistakes it happens when you've had no pre-season. I'd say he's more comfortable on the ball than Pearce.I don't think at the age of 20 that Pearce is better than someone with the experience of Ingimarsson.

I've got nothing against Ivar, he's just past it. He was deteriorating during our time in the Premiership and he's continued to do so. I've said several times he's been a good servant for the club, but he's now our worst centre back and shouldn't play. It happens to all players at some point.

Dirk Gently But Pearce can only get better as time passes and he plays more games

This is where i totally disagree.

Most young players are good athletes, and then they gain experience to go with that. Pearce is nothing like that at all. More so, it is automatically assumed that young plyers will improve, where as a lot of the time they actually go backwards. The amount of players that show promise and fail far outway those that go on to better things.

Time and games arent going to cure Pearce's flat feet and complete lack of athletisim are they? I mean, just watch the guy attempting to run or turn quicker then milk. He can't. He is playing at a level now that he will never surpass.

Destined for lower leagues.

Clearly he's not our worst defender otherwise he wouldn't be in the team. Or do you think Brendan Rodgers is, Horror, Wrong
