Ian Royal

Row Z Royal Sounds like McCarthy was probably MOTM on the radio.

He was very good but actually only had to make one difficult save (which he did, superbly).

Remarkable they didn't work him more, full credit to our aged, slow, useless back four :D

Pace just wasn't an issue really was it. Everton allowed us to play deep played tippy tappy football infront of us and didn't have wingers trying to beat their man. They couldn't move the ball forward quick enough on the few occasions they could have broken on us. Credit to McD for getting it right.

They didn't punish us for missing a couple of chances. Brilliant hard fought win. No poor performers IMO.

Certainly it wasn't an issue, the lack of attacking pace is a serious deficiency in Everton's squad.

Leigertwood man of the match yet again for me, always a thorn in their side.

And plaudits for the front two and Kebe as well. They didn't create much in the end, but their workrate was great and they threatened all the way through.

TBM Weren't even outplayed, as the stats prove

Possession
Everton50%
Reading50%

Attempts on target
Everton9
Reading8

Attempts off target
Everton6
Reading3

Corners
Everton5
Reading5

Fouls
Everton10
Reading15

Much the better team after first 15 of teh first half. Everton then probably had more of the game second half and piled on pressure, but didn't ever look particularly convincing and we were always a threat on the break.

Some snippets from the Guardian's MBM coverage...

79 min: What a save from McCarthy! How on earth has he kept that out? Everton can barely believe they aren't level and, to be honest, nor can I. Saha ran down the left and crossed to the far post to Beckford. Beckford cushioned a header back across goal and as Reading's defenders stood still, Osman arrived late to meet the dropping ball on the volley eight yards out and right in front of goal. His connection was perfect and he absolutely wellied it goalwards, only for McCarthy to fly across his goal and stick out a strong left arm to divert it away. That was astonishing. It was hit so hard there seemed to be no way he could keep it out.

88 min: Phil Neville tosses the armband to Phil Jagielka as he exits the pitch for Jose Baxter, Everton's final throw of the dice. "I know I email in saying this a lot but it needs to be said," says Alex Hanton. "So *ahem* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGHHH! READING!! We're going to go out of the cup to Reading??? !!!!! Why!!!!! *sob*" Feel his pain.

That was rather good wasn't it?

Respect to the Ref. He got every decision pretty much spot on. Like everyone else I feared a late pen/fk....and boy did they play for them.

Have to LOL at the Dublin/Keegan about face between kick off and FT!
