Ian Royal posted this on another thread; I thought it was worthy of inclusion on here:(nb - this was posted BEFORE tonights games...)
We have 6 three goal winning margins this season. Only QPR at 7 have a comparable number, and they've won 19 games to our 12 and are, lets face it, run away leaders. Swansea, Leeds & Watford all have 3 I think.
That means HALF of our wins this season have been by 3 goal margins. This is staggering, no one else (top half) is even close to that. It shows we can slaughter the weak teams (and most of them have been mid-table or worse, Burnley being the only real exception), but we can't replicate our performances enough against the better teams. And the huge percentage of games (60%) we've dropped points for want of one extra goal scored, or fewer conceeded is another reason to believe we're right on the edge of something here.
I think it's an indication that we aren't actually that far from having a very very good season sometime soon, if we can just keep most of the squad together, with a couple of tweaks we're there.
We're yet to lose a game by three goals all season and we've only lost by two goals TWICE! That's as good as QPR who have only lost three games all season.
In cricketing terms, we're Graeme Hick; a flat track bully. Luckily however, most of our remaining games are against exactly the sort of teams which we have been putting to the sword (the exceptions recently being Palace and Shef Utd).
