PLAY OFF STATS

by Crowthorne Royal » 28 Apr 2011 11:00

I know it's a little bit dangerous to start talking play off's when we are not yet in them.....however with Millwall playing Swansea and Burnley playing Leeds and having a goal difference which they cannot make up......I am confident we will be in them.

I would like to finish 5th, mainly due to the fact that I'd like to play at home first. This is seen as a disadvantage of course but I think as a team we have an inability to overcome teams who sit on a lead. Therefore for us and others this could be a distinct advantage. One thing I am certain of is that if you win or draw your first leg you are statistically highly likely to at least get to Wembley. Again, personally whilst I would be disappointed to lose a play off final (if we did) I would still see this as a season where we have overperformed versus expectation.

In the last 7 seasons only ONE team has lost a first leg tie and still got to Wembley! This was West Ham vs Ipswich in the 2004 play off's. In the last 6 seasons ALL teams that either drew or won the 1st leg went on to Wembley.

Swansea @ home first or away first........which would you fancy for The Mighty Royals?

Agree - hope we come 5th now. Our away record is good and I am confident that if we could take a lead to Swansea that we would hold on. Then Cardiff at Wembley would be great. All the pressure would be on them and I believe we would prevail.

Really?

I was under the impression to reach a play off final you had to win at least one game?

Indeed, very poor statting!

All the play-off games we've been in (from memory):

1995 - Tranmere 1 Reading 3
1995 - Reading 0 Tranmere 0
1995 - Reading 3 Bolton 4 (AET)

2001 Wigan 0 Reading 0
2001 Reading 2 Wigan 1
2001 Reading 2 Walsall 3 (AET)

2003 Wolves 2 Reading 1
2003 Reading 0 Wolves 1

2009 Burnley 1 Reading 0
2009 Reading 0 Burnley 2

So the facts are:

P10 W2 D2 L6 F11 A15

But if you want to make it a nicer reading, we can do stats where we don't include extra time:

P10 W2 D4 L4 F9 A11

Crowthorne Royal In the last 6 seasons ALL teams that either drew or won the 1st leg went on to Wembley.

Surely only half the teams that drew the first leg went to the final.

There's some great mis-statting on this thread!

LOL, nice spin again RwC  . 4 appearances in the play-offs, 4 failures. Pure and simple. There are clubs with worse records than us.....but not many. The millstone will weigh around the necks of the fans during this latest campaign, fortunately the players will be devoid of such burdens as history will not concern footballers.

By that token, you could say that we've had a 100% failure in the FA Cup and we must have made over 100 appearances in it.

So officially we are IN the play off now.
For a time being, I appreciate Brian and Co for their achievement so far!
