Best local player we have developed

by Cape Town Royal » 30 Jul 2013 11:16

Forgive me if this has been a thread before, but wondered who people thought was the best 'local' (as in Reading/surrounding area/Berkshire)' player to come through the Reading youth system...

For me, I would say Neil Webb, because not only did he look brilliant for Reading when he first came through (all be it in the lower leagues) he went on and played for both England and Man Utd so had a top career beyond Reading (before he... well you know.... got larger.....)

Best local player we missed out on?

Perhaps Slough-born Peter Osgood who had trials with Reading before enjoying a very successful career with Chelsea, Southampton.

And Compton's own Theo Walcott, of course.

Sanchez didn't have a bad career. Played at the top flight international football FA cup winner. I think if Aidy had not been so unlucky with injuries he could have played for a top team.

Thank you Tim Dellor. Every time he scores for Arsenal he mentions that like it's something we should be proud off, that our hopeless scouts failed to pick up the most talented player this county has ever produced.

You could open this thread up and cahnge it to 'Your favourite' or 'In your lifetime'. In that instance, I'd go for Adie Williams ( I know he's Welsh, but he did come through the Reading ranks).

Another great shout. There are of course, subjective views on a subject like this. You can't really compare players form different positions and different eras also.

I guess the only real barometer would be trophies at the end of their respective careers.
having said look at shearer, he was committed to wanting to play for his home town club which cost him multiple trophies at not wanting to join man u. just ended up with 1 league title from what I can remember

My subjective view is that you can't really consider Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, local to Reading.

There is an Iceland in Lower Earley, that's pretty local.

Johnny Brooks and Neil Webb. Both Reading-born, came through the ranks and played for England.

As I understand it Reading knew of him and would of taken him but sadly so did Southampton and they were PL so he was drawn there
