Team for Derby

by Ian Royal » 19 Sep 2013 11:03

With Jem out and Hal putting in a good shift upfront this could be an interesting one.

.....................McCarthy
....Kelly..Morrison..Pearce..Bridge
..McAnuff......Guthrie..Williams
...............ALF......................Drenthe
.........................HRK

Federici, Gorkss, Gunter, Akpan, McCleary, Blackman, Ugwu

HRK did the best job anyones done centrally last night. ALF has to start because he's our only genuine goal threat. So I'd try him just off Hal covering out wide right / dropping into midfield when we lose the ball. McAnuff in midfield because he's decent defensively can pass and can also drift wide to give us the width we need putting ALF in the box. It's much the same system as last night and we should be trying for consistency and continuity where possible.
If Guthrie and Jobi are out, we look screwed. So the youth will need to be used.

I think we have a problem as Guthrie also looked injured last night and McAnuff is also injured let alone Karacan.

Assuming we stay with 4-3-3 (or 4-3-2-1) the issue is which of the front players or defenders can come into the midfield three. I agree with Ian that HRK has looked better than anyone else has at the central attacking role and think he should stay there.

Personally I think that either Gunter or Cummings could do a job in CM in an emergency situation like this (the only alternative being the likes of Jake Taylor or D'Ath). On balance and on the assumption that Karacan, Guthrie, McAnuff and Legs are all out I would go:

McCarthy
Kelly Pearce Morrison Bridge
Akpan Williams Gunter
McCleary HRK Drenthe

Subs
Fed
Cummings
Gorkks
Pog
ALF
Blackman
Obita/D'Ath/Taylor

Akpan in for Karacan, Pogrebnyak and Taylor on the bench in place of Akpan and Obita. Other than that, same as last night. Quite liked the system but we just need to get more confident with it.

Most of you seem to be failing to take into account the injuries to Guthrie and possibly Williams and Blackman last night and the fact that McAnuff is also injured and we don't know if he is ready to come back yet.

We could be very thin on the ground come Saturday. We might even see all of Obita, Jake Taylor and D'Ath on the bench.

No idea how serious those injuries are. People are picking them til they are ruled out.

Ian Royal ALF has to start because he's our only genuine goal threat.
Doesn't he score most of his goals when he comes off the bench? For that reason, I'd be inclined to bring him on for the last 30 minutes.

This starting 11 would be ideal.
If Guthrie's out then I would stick Tshibola in. He plays the Guthrie role for the U21's, and plays it very well too. A midfield two of Williams and Akpan was disastrous against Peterborough, and shouldn't be repeated. McAnuff's experience would help Tshibola.

In terms of subs, I would replace Blackman with Obita. Let's face it, one of these two players is young and has potential, and it isn't Nick Blackman.

Federici, Gunter, Gorkss, Le Fondre, Blackman, Obita, some academy player that can play CM

Assuming Jobi and the obvious lot are all out injured.

In the last couple of seasons yes. Although there are reasons why. But this season no.

It's not like we have a better striker.
