Looking at Spurs and Pochettino's abject failure this season, you do have to wonder whether he inherited a very good team from NA that enabled him to succeed at Southampton ... ? The assumption so far has always been that Pochettino took Saints one step further than NA could have done, but looking at what he's tried to do at Spurs this season, you've got to wonder ....

A poor squad. The team over achieved.

"Overachieved"? How is that even possible? You achieve what you achieve. You cannot achieve more than you are capable of. Typical stupid football fan-speak to suit an idiotic viewpoint.

Southampton. A prime example of what a VG manager can do with a squad that everyone tipped for relegation. If only we had a manager that could get the best out of his players.

Maybe the terms means that they achieved more than would usually be expected, given their inherent quality, and that therefore one shouldn't expect the achievement to be routinely repeated,

Just a thought.

Ermm - fairly sure the word 'overachieved' is used in contexts other than just football.

bit of a lol at the Parky voters

Anybody been tracking Bradford's mediocre results just lately?.....pretty much where we are, but a division below

a decent debut into management for the massive Colchester........but he hardly set the world alight for Hull nor Charlton

Psh, he had a cup run once too. Of course he'd do a good job for us.

Lacoste

Villa will sack lambert soon. He is the one we want. Took Norwich up two divisions buying lower league players on the cheap who then perfored in the prem. All young and all quality.

If he became available there is noone o would want more in a realistic world.

I disagree mate. A good manager can can an average group of players into a good team, greater than the sum of their parts.
McD was a victim of his own success. Had we not gone up, he'd probably still be here!
There's no way we had the best players in the division when we were promoted, Wet Spam and Southampton were much stronger, however our cumulative effort, overseen by McD made us a better overall team, hence, we overachieved.
By your logic it must be also impossible to underachieve. A genius failing an exam within their field of expertise would surely be considered an underachievement...

I'm not sure that's really true.

Across the three sides, we had the best goalkeeper (probably the two best goalkeepers), two of the three best central defenders (along with Tomkins), and the best central midfielder. Kebe was the only right winger at any of the clubs who looked the part.
A "strongest side" that year would probably have looked something like this:

Federici; Richardson, Pearce, Tomkins/Gorkss, Fox; Kebe, Leigertwood, Schneiderlin, Lallana; Nolan; Lambert

This "huge gap" is something that has been invented in retrospect by eternal pessimists and/or people seeking to play up McDermott's achievements. At the time, fans of other clubs would often praise Legs, Kebe and the centre backs. I know a West Ham fan who went to all their matches that year and he said Legs was the best player he saw all season (though that might be because we beat them so comprehensively twice).

If it was all about team-work then any team could go up. You have to have the quality there too.

Agreed.

It's almost as ridiculous as "Adkins did quite well at Southampton so he'll be able to do the same here."

I agree totally with that but wouldn't define that as "overachievement". That's just a team being better than the sum of their parts. It's what team sports are all about and what makes, say, football more interesting than, say, tennis.

Agree with this as well but, again, that's the essence of teamwork not "overachievement".

And, finally, I agree with this!

If the club listen to you gimps that want Atkins sacked and appoint Parky/Pulis/Strachan/Lambert in his place, would you then all be happy that they've got the right man and support the manager no matter what?

No, of course you won't......you'll still pfucking moan!

And if they listen to you and Reading get relegated because of Atkins will you be happy? No, you'll moan about how your f[u]cking hospitality suite doesn't stock caviar anymore.
