Great pre-season friendlies of the past

by floyd__streete » 13 Jul 2006 13:42

Abingdon Town, late 90's: Free to get in, bouncy castle and I half-inched the Abingdon sub 'keeper's Sondicos. 5-2 TTB&W, Jimmy Quinn hatrick.

Maidenhead United, 1995: 2-1 down to Ryman League non-entities barely 2 months after being 4 minutes away from the Premiership, Raeding sneak a 3-2 with Morley (pen) and Morley (@rse) doing the damage. A male streaker struts his stuff and, in the absence of any stewards, climbs back over the hoardings and is re-united with his clothes and watches the remainder of the game.

ALOLdershot Town, 2001:

Didcot Town, last summer: Bit battered to be honest, Lubomir Blaha's finest hour from what little I remember.

West Ham, 05 August 2001: 2-0 down after about 20 mins and looking like getting battered. A superb Reading comback to be leading 4-2 at half time. Both teams made substantial substitutions in the second half and final score was 5-4. Cureton hatrick, Henderson and Parky were our scorers.

That West Ham game was also memorable to me for winding up Nigel Winterburn at half-time. As they were leaving the pitch I was waving and laughing at the Hammers and Nigelol took great offence and started waving his fist at me, which just made me laugh and wave even more, chanting cherio cherio cherio. He then started towards the East Stand and looked sternly at me gesticulating wildly at me. Me and everyone around us couldn't believe it. I don't remember much after that as we were just laughing too hard.

Great match.

Featured a rare gem.

A pacey cross from Rougier for Cureton to finish.

I said " Told you he could do it"

I remember us playng Genoa at Elm park and losing 4-0. I think it was in 1988, but might have been 1989. Anyway, we got destroyed by a very good Itailian side.

Also remember a friendly against Man Utd at Elm Park in the early nineties.. We lost 1-0 and remember having to go in the away end as I went with a couple of Man Utd supporters.

Wasn't that when Danny Wallace was playing for them?

Can't remember, but I remember that Gary Walsh was in goal and Russell Beardsmore was playing for them at the time.

7/8/1991 - Reading 2 Dnepropetrovsk 4

The Ukrainian club had been Soviet League champions only four years previously. I can recall us being 2-1 at half-time including a headed goal by fat useless David Leworthy, but they moved up about ten gears in the second half and were applauded off at the end, and rightly so, they were the best team seen at EP for several years – it was a joy to watch.

I always thought that we drew 1-1.

Me too, probably D.Beckham, P.Scholes etc etc!!
Does anybody know the actual Man u team for that day.

The West Ham friendly was entertaining, although neither team's defending was up to much.

Wasn't that post season 1992/93 after we won Division Two, and it pissed it down all day long, but we had the trophy presented that day and then the open bus tour?

I remember one Italian balancing the ball on his head and cutting through our defence towards the Tilehurst End!
