Big Foot If you look at Reading's best signings in our last 15 years or so, they've typically been players who's careers are on an upward trajectory.
Jason Roberts' career was on a downwards trajectory

That kind of goes without saying really. If they signed for us and didn't turn out to be a success then their career was only going to go downwards!

We've signed plenty that we'd hope were on an upward trajectory that suddenly stalled and then nosedived (Marcus Williams, David Mooney, Manset etc).

We've also signed established players like McAnuff, Leigertwood, Harte, Gunnarsson, Armstrong and Little who've turned out to be successful for us.

Saying that, I'd agree with you on Mackie BF. He doesn't seem to be as effective as he was in his best spell at QPR before the injury. He's useful now to plug a gap but I don't think he's a longer term solution after the loan expires.

Gilksy
GH Royal
Gilksy Big yes from me.

Tries hard, closes down well but doesn't beat his man enough on the wing and little end product. No thanks. Will do for the time being though but I'd hope we would be in good position in the summer so we don't have to panic buy and can find a better option for around the same price (£500k mentioned above)

You're in for a huge shock this summer then. Less parachute payments and even more cuts need to be made to balance the already overinflated books. The likes of Mackie, if they are affordable, we will be very grateful of.

I thought the parachute payments were £15m per year for 4 seasons?

either way it would be a no from me. We need quality not people who run a lot. if we need someone to run a lot then Mo Farah is available

From what I can see the payments we get are £15m for the first season, £17m for the second and then a further two payments of £8m per season (that's according to an article on the BBC from 2013).

I think that ^^ is the new deal that came into effect the season after we were releg8ed. For us, the payments only last three seasons and are front loaded so we got the most in our first season back down.

That payment structure came in to effect in 2010 apparently.

Just wanted to highlight Mackie's recent improvement for us. Up until recently I've had a bit of a mixed view of Mackie. It's clear he's not technically the best player, but his directness and work rate makes him a big threat at this level, a similar mould to Stephen Hunt. Would quite like to see him & Gmac on the wings going forward.

If we are going back to spirit and drive, and if Mackie is fairly cheap, then it's a no-brainer
for a two-year contract.

3 goals and 3 assists in the league for us, in 1190 games, rarely played as a striker

397 minutes per goal
199 minutes per goal or assist

I think he needs to be part of a front 2

Yes from me. Shows the kind of passion and determination I like to see in a player.

oops, MINUTES

He either scores a goal or gets an assist every other games

That would be 12 goals and 11 assists in a full league season.

You need more from a player being used as a winger?

His energy, chasing down no-hope balls or closing down players can be inspirational.

In the 3-0 versus Rotherham he scored a goal and got an assist.

He gained us two points at Ipswich with the only goal

He gained us a point with the late goal at Bolton

He's doing better than Pog in goals/assists

1,190 Minutes for 3 Goals and 3 Assists Mackie, playing as a winger.
1,213 Minutes for 3 Goals and 1 Assists Pogrebnyak, playing as central striker

Big Tim He can go back to Forest anytime he wants. I always come away from games complaining about his lack of final ball.

Stuart Pearce is the next manager to be sacked and a new manager who can't buy any new players, due to FFP will want him back.

The lack of final ball like that which set up Pog in the first half yesterday? The lack of final ball like the shots that have gained us valuable points?

Why quote someone on a post that was posted 2 months ago....

Maybe at the time it was true, just means that he's worked on that aspect lately and its showing.

So probably about right for us.

A broken watch.....etc etc.

I'd still agree that despite having some valuable contributions over the last few weeks Mackie's final ball is consistently a bit poor, much like most of this teammates unfortunately! HIs work rate and attitude are great yes, and he offers a different kind of option to McLeary down the right hand side, so I could see the logic behind keeping him but I'd still like to think we'll be able to find someone better for the kind of money he's probably likely to cost us.

He's this squads version of Andy Hughes.

I like him! In the summer when we've lost some big names and we're bringing in nobodies, those currently wanting Mackie to go back to Forest will be crying out for him. He's a player with great energy and determination - the sort we should build a team around, unlike many of the over-paid half-arsed wasters here.

KEEP!

Clarke seems to like him, and honestly, that's all that matters.

UPDATE: now 5 goals and 3 assists in the league for us, in 1270, played once as a striker

247 minutes per goal
159 minutes per goal or assist

I think he needs to be part of a front 2

And he gets two goals in 80 minutes....
