Not my first choice to take over.....but maybe not so bad in that he knows the players, has been with the club for many years and - IIRC - wasn't he also well involved with the Doyle deal, so knows how to spot a player? I remember seeing McDermott at a fans forum and he came across as a likeable and impressive chap, unlike Rodgers who I found to be rather drab and speaking in soundbites.

To be honest, whoever takes over has 2 and a half years of mistakes and bad management to contend with, so I think we'll have to take the relegation hit regardless. I'd like Ferguson personally, as he has already been successful in League One in the past.

Is that right? Seems odd to have a trial period unless you are a full-time employee.

Anyway, some outsider thoughts:

Unless JM has a first class appointment lined up then this is an odd decision (if based purely on footballing reasons) especially if there is no money to spend at Xmas as I'm not sure if there is anyone better around:

Curbs - great but unlikely
Southgate - noooooooooooooo
Sanchez - furk no
Fergie Jnr - no real difference to BR
McDermott - unknown, although knows the squad etc..., but a $$ saver??
Pards - prob not
Parkie - unlikely to move
Some unknown foreigner...

To me, with the incumbent senior managment and no $, it looks somewhat of a poision chalice to all but the desperate...Southgate / Sanchez it is then

what a situation to fly home to. i admit i havent read the whole thread, i think i got the gist from every third page or so.

my penny's worth would be, anyone who thinks that we are NOW a relegation candidate hasnt been watching so far this season. as far as championship for goes, and to quote yazz, the only way is up. i do, in a very measured amount, feel sorry for brenda, like you feel sorry for a horse that dies after falling into a swimming pool cos' it thought the cover was solid ground. but it is for the best whether its now or after the next five games when he would have garnered us no points and a start of the new decade in the relegation zone. the one thing that is for sure is that solving the problems currently endemic at this club will not be easy, and nor will it be cheap. it is time for SJM in his inimitable folic wisdom to put up, the club must be massively devalued now anyway so its in his long term interest to maintain his business plan and get things back on track.

oh, and ferguson would do very nicely.

Rodgers had a very good game plan. Rather like Tommy Burns' plans though, it just didn't suit the standard of players he had available, or their individual strengths.

Logically, it would seem that Fergie Jnr has been lined up.

This is my take on what might have happened.

Summer 09 - Peterboro approached by Reading. All over the papers that Fergie is our number one target. Fergie thinks it's a chance to prove himself at an ambitious club with big (ish) fan base and big (ish) stadium). In other words, a reasonable step up as he prepares to take over at Old Trafford. However, Posh board say no way. Fergie very unhappy.

Reading's number one target gone, we settle for a guy who spouts how much he loves the club and the big ideas he's got.

Sadly, the promises are hard to keep when Rodgers starts to realise there is little more that can be done.

Skip to November 09, Reading go back to Posh on the down low, ask whether Fergie would still be interested, Posh board find out, get pissed off with Fergie and tell him to oxf*rd off.

Early December 09, with Fergie nicely in position, Mr Madj gives it a couple of games just to see if Brenda can keep any of his promises, and when it appears that he can't, he gets rid, and Fergie slips quietly into the hot seat.

This is probably a whole load of tosh, and TBH, i'm not sure i would want Fergie, but the theory seems to fit!

Brendan Rodgers has parted company with Reading, the struggling Coca-Cola Championship club.

The surprise move came only six months after the former Watford manager was appointed to succeed Steve Coppell at the Madejski Stadium.

However, it could prove a lucrative departure for Rodgers, who is believed to have had a clause in his contract that stated, if he was dismissed, he would be paid the full term of his three-year deal.

It could explain why his exit was officially described as being “by mutual consent”, suggesting that a financial compromise has been struck.

Dean Austin, his assistant, and Frank Lampard Sr, Reading’s football consultant, who both joined with Rodgers, have also left. Brian McDermott, the chief scout, takes responsibility for first-team matters until a new manager is appointed.
