Jack Whitham's hat-trick against Hartlepool in 1975 were the only goals he scored for Reading.

I remember us being 3-0 up at half time against Port Vale and creaming it but falling apart in the second half. IIRC, Archie had scored a hat-trick in the previous home game.

One name not on Strap's list is Jimmy Quinn - who surprisingly never scored a hat-trick for Reading (I'm not blaming Strap for not including him of course). Amazing considering Les Chappell got 7.

Obvious question to waste more of Strap's day - which Reading player has scored most goals for the club without ever getting a hat-trick (the kind of opposite of Jack Whitham).

Also surprising (to me) Quinn never played a single minute in the top-flight of English football.

Was Rodney Thornhill (very British) the only non-striker to score a hat-trick for us?
I would bet that he was the only non-striker to score 4 goals for us in one game on that very wet day v Watford(?)

Linden Jones managed 2 at the right end and one at the wrong v Sunderland in the cup in 1990.

Steve Hetzke was mainly a centre half but did play upfront a bit. Don't recall his hat-trick though.

Well Steve Hetzke was a central defender, (although TBF he scored his hat-trick in the AMC in Aug 1981 - with 2 of his 3 coming from the penalty spot - although he was playing in defence).

Rod Thornhill was a "play anywhere" player I believe,
playing left-half in 63/64,
inside right (when he scored his 4), left-half, inside-left and right-half in 64/65,
right-half and a game at centre-half in 65/66
4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 in 66/67,
3, 4 and 12 in 67/68,
3, 4, 6, 7, 10 and 12 in 68/69,
3 and one game at 6 in 69/70.

George Johnson was a right-half who played for us 1932-37. He scored his hat-trick on his debut whilst at centre-forward. He played his first 3 games at centre-forward, but thereafter he made the right-half spot his own.

Dai Evans (1924-28) was a left/right half but played 5 consecutive games at centre-forward in Jan/Feb 1926, scoring 6 goals, including 3 in his second game at nr 9.

We've also had plenty of wingers getting 3 or more in a game, but seeing as Steve Hetzke was the only playing in a "defensive" role o the occasion of his hat-trick, (albeit including 2 pens), so I'm plumping for him over Rod Thornhill.

Just astonishing that Quinny never notched a treble. I do remember a purple patch he had in October 93 when he scored two goals in five consecutive games, including the 6-4 win at Exeter. Still the only league game where five different players have scored a brace each.

Blimey, I hadn't realised Gooding scored so much. I only ever saw his twilight... even then he was a cracking little player.

RoyallyFcuked Leroy Lita.... I can also remember there was talk of him possibly getting a call up to the England first team, during his purple patch in our first Prem season.

Thanks for reminding me of this. Always good to start the weekend with a giggle.

Possibly one of our greatest ever?

Staggering to remember he was about 30 when he joined us, and then went on to make well over 300 starts!
