There is a different standard to fitness for top level football players than army fitness playing amateur footy. Not knocking it at all but the pace at champ level is probably several levels higher than what you probably think it is.
Also think people are blurring the line between being fit, being match fit and being match sharp against another Champ side.

Happy to see some fringe players get a run out / get more experience. We have a lot of youth that need to step up for next season.

probably worth seeing what the actual team is before roasting Pauno for selecting it

I read it as some rotation but a similar team to Derby

It won't be the dream for every pro though - at least not now they are a pro - for most it will be a job and just a way to set up their family for life.

It is quite possible that if these players were playing 20 years ago, some of those out would have been back by now and played through the injuries but the stories you often read of older ex players who's bodies are shot and the advances in player monitoring mean that players are not often risked unless they are close to 100%.

There is a money factor as well of course, football is a business now and players are the key commodity in the game, so clubs won't risk a player these days in the way they may well of done 20/30 years ago.

Given the players available I'm not sure how much he can rotate. Maybe Camara and Azeez will come in for players like Swift and Halilovic but I'd still expect the 18 match day squad from Derby to be relatively similar to Kidderminster tomorrow. We still need to get minutes in the legs of some players.

If Carroll is in the squad surely that would give us an inkling about if he`s going to stay because sure as hell he won`t want to be cup tied.

Like Coppell did while he was here?

Coppell always put out a team that could win and iirc we almost never lost to a lower place team under him.

He used first team squad rotation with some youth players, not an Academy side with little hope.

It's going to be a fine balancing act between getting minutes in players and risking players getting injured in a game that we should stand a good chance of winning with a few less experienced players out there.

I think the team may have been more full strength if we weren't due to play Fulham on Tuesday now.

Whilst that may be the case, we were always very lacklustre in the cup under him and always got the impression that it didn't really mean anything to him.

I'm glad that Pauno has a first team squad to use for rota.... oh

does he have a choice? He is contracted to us to play, so he should be in the team whether he is staying or not

Yeah that's true I can't imagine many players that will be starters against Fulham will be playing 90 minutes at the weekend.

tmesis Yep. We have two wins in two and a half months.

Anything that that can bring a bit of confidence back into the team will be a bonus. I really don't see how losing to a team from the 6th tier of the game will help us in any way.

Not quite the same as they were in League Two but recall us going with a strong side to Stevenage a few years back in the hope it would revamp our season. If anything, that was the game when fans really started to turn against Stam and the team

Was that the game when McShane blew up at the fans? And Gunter had to apologise as they stormed off the pitch or something? IIR, we had zero shots in the first half hence why it turned ugly

Yeah - had followed the Burton and Birmingham home games too in a two week span so was a real low point but that game was the first where people really did turn on the team. Would argue that game ended McShane’s career here too, don’t recall him playing much more after that one (aside from one particular game)

Depends on the terms I guess. Given it was such a short deal, they may well have put a clause (or made a verbal agreement) that he wouldn't play in the 3rd round in case he were to leave next week and sign for another club who may still be in the cup.

possibly true. I'm not too sure it will be a major point of contention anyway tbh. Would be disappointed if he didn't play for that reason though

Yep, basically did a Matt Mills as headed down the tunnel, think only Gunter acknowledged the away fans. Presumably wasn't a huge fan of the Pass it back, pass it back, Reading FC song. Have to say that was the most vitriolic atmosphere at a game I've ever encountered. Unbelievably toxic. Single bright spot of a shit game, shit town was Omar Richard's performance. Looked superb.

I remember Jaakola getting pelters every time there was a goal kick, really seemed to get to him. Think a few of the players had their feelings hurt that day. The atmosphere that day was toxic as you say, supporters were arguing with eachother, the players were arguing with eachother and some of the shouts to the players around me were brutal. Something came over the away end that day, bizarre afternoon.

Completely disagree on Coppell. His cup record was good.
