Y25 David Byrne was pretty good. We should have signed him at the time.

IIRC he was available for about £50k but Mr Madejski said no.

Tilehurst End 1 Upson
2 Wright
3 Watson
4 Salako
5 Juryeff

I'd go along with that I always thought Ian Juryeff would have been a really good signing for us...

Juryeff had the biggest man-boobs ever seen in League football.

FAO Shaka's Shorts.........
Paul Canoville was a permanent signing by Ian Branfoot. In the region of £60,000 I believe which was quite a lot at the time. He lit Elm Park up for a tragically brief spell before being nobbled by Dave Swindlehurst on a cold midweek evening up at Sunderland. Don't think he ever played again ~ what a waste.

John Salako was my favourite loanee. Hadn't seen many ex-England players pulling on the hoops before him(although there's been a few since!) and he put in some fantastic performances at places like Bury, Wrexham and Bristol City ~ places I hope we never have to visit again!

I remember reading somewhere that in ye oldie Elm Park days Reading tried to sell a player and then realised he was only on loan to them from Arsenal or somewhere

Honourable mention for Bob Hazell. Sent off within half an hour of his debut for headbutting someone. It was the legendary 0-0er against Barnsley where Paul Futcher got sent off for being Ron's brother.

John Salako and Steve Mautone. The latter just because we could ryhme his name with loan in his song.

'Steve Mautone, he's on loan, Steve Mautone, he's on loan!'

He did make a come back, and I think he even scored on his return the next season (v Oldham?). Unfortunately his leg failed to properly recover and he only played a handful of games after that before retiring.

He was Chelsea's first black player and got massively booed on his debut by his own "fans".

jon56565 Worst could soon be Peter Mate. i hope not though

Why?! He scored in his only first team appearance and it's hardly his fault he got injured.

There's been far worse.

Top Flight Mark Robson was a very good loan signing for us. He was on loan from Spurs as a 17 year old. Very skinny boy. Ended up playing for Charlton.

Good on paper, regrettably less than satisfactory on the field of play, he was lazy and ineffective. As documented recently on the GF forum, he was roundly barracked by the travelling loyal Royals at The Valley in the '94 match, and celebrated his goal by sticking his fingers up at us - what a guy.

I'm not talking about how he played for Charlton. Before he joined Charlton he was on loan with us as a skinny little kid from Tottenham.

When he played for us, I remember him skinning most full backs and the South Bank singing sign him on. The reason he was barracked by the loyal Royals at the Valley in 94 was probably because he decided to join Charlton a couple of years earlier instead of us.

He was a good player for us during his loan spell. If he didn't fulfil his potential and became cr*p while at Charlton then thats another matter. I don't watch Charlton so I wouldn't know.

I agree with the other poster that said Robson was swamped in his kit.

Canoville was a permanent signing, costing us 60k. Career was finished at Sunderland about 10 games into the 86/87 season.

parky Ben roberts was one of the best we had if i remember rightly he was a quality keeper that i thaught was a lot better than Hahnemann

I actually thought that aswell. When we signed Hahnemann, i thought to myself that we should of tried to sign Roberts instead.

But the best loan signing for me was matty upson. I have never seen a player have so much impact on the team. I remember the Portsmouth game, think it was Upson's last game for us before he went back to Arsenal and Pompey were top of the league aswell.

But for some reason i felt really relaxed about our defending coz i knew they wouldnt get past Upson.
