Yorkshire Royal If you were to remove you RTG's you may see that he has a point. Look at Wigan and West Ham this year. Look at Ipswich in the past. The difficult second season will be with us, and we may well end up in a relegation dogfight.

Who wants an unknown Scot anyway? Let him go to Celtic, 'enjoy' competing in a two horse race and still remain unknown outside Scotland!

To be fair he's far from unknown, but I do think that he is also very overated and that there are better players out there that would be more than happy to play for Reading.

nivek elyod Can't blame him for choosing Celtic over us, but his comments about us are a load of bollocks...

Agreed

In what way? I'm intrigued on people's take on why his comments are either a load of bollocks or some sort of insult.

It's the use of the word probably that grates. We will probably end up somewhere in mid table. We might be relegated, but that is less likely.

Him dismissing us as likely relegation fodder is a bit cheap.

He didn't need to make any negative comments about Reading, that's the problem. In his position, I would have made the same decision, but if asked about in an interview would have said, "Celtic are a massive club (in Scotalnd at least), who are competing at the highest level of club football in the Champions League. I have respect for Steve Coppell and what he's achieved at Reading, but felt that teh opportunity of European at Celtic was too good to turn down". No need to label us as relegation candidates, as that applies to everyone in the league below Everton.

I really don't see that he is dismissing us as that though. He is simply saying what may happen.

That we will probably be in a relegation fight which is still more likely than us aiming for Europe again next season. I think we'll be fine but the former is still more likely than the latter.

As I said you could easily swap the name Reading for one of another 10 clubs. The big difference being that we moved for him and others didn't.

It is clearly utter nonsense, especially considering our performance in this campaign, to suggest that we will most likely struggle to avoid relegation next season and, even if that were true, what a stupid thing to say!

"I had offers from a number of excellent clubs south of the border but elected to stay in Scotland and sign for Celtic" would have been the sensible line to take.

Yes his choice of words could have been better but it's a tad over-sensitive to get all upset about it. As I've said you can easily replace the name Reading with about half the Premier League.

I would imagine that most players probably think the same way about us at the moment - we're a one season wonder. I don't think we will be for a moment but can completely understand why someone would say we may be down the bottom next year - it's hardly an insult.

But you are only able to say that because you've been following RFC for the past few years so know what we're all about. This fellow Brown is probably just looking at us and comparing us to West Ham and (more likely) Wigan from last year, both of whom had good seasons, and both of whom really struggled this year.

Try to look at things from a neutral's POV, and you'll see that what he said is what most people probably would expect for us next year. We know that Coppell and Madejski won't go down the same route that West Ham and Wigan have, but the rest of the footballing world doesn't.

Having just read the article on the official, site, what a silly idiot :?

Why refuse to speak to Coppell? Why not fully consider an alternative rather than just dismissing it out of hand?

His remarks were unneccesary and ill informed but I agree with original suggestion....................stick them on the dressing room wall and add it to all the reams of nonsense that have been written about us in recent times.

Bucks Dave There's an old showbusiness saying : "Don't be rude to people on the way up, you may meet them again on the way down".

I think his choice of words was daft since it's never a good idea to put down teams you know nothing about. I think Steve Coppell was referring to Brown in the LMA question and answer referred to in the OS on his manager of the month award - why p*ss someone off like SC? Just say that Celtic guarantee European football and leave it at that.

Well said that man - he didn't need to say anything about us. To do so shows he is an arrogant b*stard...

That sums up the small time attitude that afflicts a lot of young Scottish players. You would get 6 decent games at Celtic against top European clubs nextseason, at Reading you would get 8 against clubs that have been in the CL semis within the last two years, plus a more competitive league, plus a chance to really prove yourself.

Small time idiot. Attitudes like that are why Scottish youth teams regularly get to the final of major competitions, but the players almost never break into the full national side.

...and he's a dirty hibee anyway, so we don't want him.

I'm sorry Stranded, but the tone of his comments suggest that as far as he's concerned we're fighting relegation next season and will quite probably go down.

As for saying you can swap in any of another 10 teams is rubbish, No one is going to say:

If I went to Middlesborough I would probably be in a relegation fight and may drop into the Championship.

We almost certainly won't do as well next season, but there are plenty of teams worse than us and I think the chances of us being in a relegation dogfight for the whole season are comfortingly slim. We may drift around the edge of it for a bit, thats quite likely, but I think to say we're probably going to be in a relegation battle is foolish

More interesting is the fact that we had a £4.4 million bid accepted !

Last summer we had similar sized bids in for Lescott, Mensah and Fae (IIRC) which suggests JM is fairly serious about investing in new talent.

I predict we will break our transfer record at least twice this summer (by which I mean we'll sign 2 players who cost more than Halford - just to cover my back in case we splash £5 million and then follow it up with a £4 million deal)

To be honest you can't really blame him for choosing Celtic, besides it's not like previous bad statements about the club have done us any harm:

"Southampton are a far greater team than Reading"- Darren Powell after drawing 0-0 with Reading. Reading finish top with a record points total, Southampton finish mid-table.

"We'll see who's laughing at the end of the season"- Neil Warnock after Sheff Utd's 2-1 loss to Reading. Reading finish 16 points ahead of Sheff Utd.

"You know you have a problem when you lose to a team like Reading"- Martin Jol after Reading's 3-1 win over Jol's Tottenham. Reading finish 1 point off a UEFA Cup place.
