ZacNaloen I have no issue with Roberts message, I have issue with the friendly fire he felt was necessary to make his point

But it's possible to criticise an organisation's lack of achievement without criticising that organisation itself - for instance by pointing it's constraints and lack of funding. That's what he was trying to do, maybe it didn't come across so well or be appreciated that way by everyone.

Royal Lady im not really sure that this is something he needs for his post footy career
How very dare you! Yes he has got a high media profile, presents radio shows and appears as a pundit on MOTD/football focus and, personally, I would rather see his energies directed towards the bloody football field at the moment (and learning how to jump for a flaming header) than getting his profile raised any further. He clearly got the hump over the shorter ban for JT and it just happened to coincide with the latest KIO campaign. So do one.

Hi RL.

How come you're so angry about someone making a principled stand over something they believe in? Don't you think it's possible to make a stand like that and still practice your football?

It's not just that he's making a stand - he's getting his face in all the media outlets - papers/tv/radio - but he's not actually said what he wants to change has he?

And anyway, it is my duty on this board to be indignant at anything and everything.

I answered this point of yours before. Surely, he has said clearly that he wants the level of punishment for racism to increase.

He's said the punishments dished out haven't been enough. He's given no indication of what he would consider to be enough or how they should be differentiated (if at all)though. It sounds like hollow words when all you do is say what someone else is doing isn't good enough without offering real alternative.

He hasn't said exactly what the punishments should be, which I think is wise of him (though he has referred to the normal world of work and the sort of sanctions that happen there). But he has said that sentencing should not be inconsistent and that it should not take so long. Few would disagree. But I am confused by the argument that Roberts is not saying anything. Surely the point is to inject some urgency into the football authorities. And that does seem to have happened, which it wouldn't have done if they thought there was nothing to improve.

Who knows/ decides what is enough? If I was racist and said something to a colleague at work, i'd be sacked, end of. I'd also be banned from working in the health service ever again (i think). I think this is a fair punishment if the victim was made to feel like/treated like a second class citizen. Only Anton Ferdinand knows how he felt when Terry said that, so should he be involved in deciding the punishment? It's an almost impossible dilema, hence Roberts didn't offer an alternative. What would yours be out of interest?

When I was living in Belfast my wife came to visit for a couple of weeks with my daughter. She loved it, as did I, and we seriously talked about settling there. It got me thinking about how my daughter's life would develop. A mixed-race woman talking with a Norn Iron accent!! If I could just persuade her to be a lesbian she'd have had a job for life with the BBC!!

How can that be, when black people never get given a chance? :?

:D
i was unaware of any discrimination being highlighted in the music and talk radio industry, or the BBC

Royal Lady Well, personally, and this may be controversial to some people, I think Roberts just wants to raise his profile for when he retires, probably at the end of the season - so that the "media" will want to talk to HIM about all things racist and not Clarke Carlisle. Or something along those lines. He saw, after the JT and Serbia thing, an opening to make a name for himself on the back of the upcoming KIO campaign.

In days gone by, players who played football AND also had another job were known as semi-professionals. Maybe Mr Roberts could concentrate on his football for now and leave his media career until AFTER he has retired/we've let him go.

whatalotofshit

can the issue just not be imprtant to him, cos hes black, a footballer, and a member of the PFA board?

you were the one saying he only did it to make a name for himself.
i disagreed saying hes already got a name and profile, and was simply upset by the recent racist issues.
you then go on to explain yourself that hes already got a name, a high profile
and how its not because of trying to get a higher profile, but instead because hes got the hump because of several racist issues

which is what i said in my post.

great arguing mrs lady. superb stuff

Seriously, blacks, you've got one guy doing a phone-in - what more could you possibly expect?

Don't forget we've had to put up with Garth Crooks on the BBC for years as well!
