Extended-Phenotype
StokeFan Hiya guys, Stoke fan here!

Never heard those two words together before. The phrasing rouses the same uncomfortable feelings as combining the words “dog” and “porn” ,or “Scandinavian” and “friend”.

Or “don’t worry, your surgeon is the same guy who performed gender reassignment surgery on” and “George Osbourne”.

Now now, don't be stokeist!

reading_fan As someone who lives in Brum and was brought up in Shropshire, I would have said "the North" started on the Staffs/Cheshire border, so a little bit north of Stoke.

Everything above the M25 and M4 is up north.

Big Foot Absolute LOL at a Stoke fan coming on here saying it's their first visit here considering the amount of times they've played at the Madejski. Guess even Stoke have their plastics who've jumped on the PL bandwagon....

btw chaps - fcuk off newbies

Absolute LOL at any Reading fan who doesn't know that Stoke have plastics considering the amount of times we played them in the lower divisions in front of a half full Britannia. As soon as they got in the PL suddenly the ground was full and they were being hailed as "great fans" by Hanson and co.

Nobody calls them out on it like they do to nice, middle-class Reading because Stoke is seen as a working class place.

Yes. AND No. It is North of the M4 where the M4 passes it, but since the M4 then loops North, by the time you get just a mile or two up the road, the M4 is in a more northerly position than the MadStad. Thus qualifying as down South

Maybe we should settle that north is north of The Thames then?

I thought it was above the Watford Gap, which is actually nowhere near Watford and is near Northampton and makes much more sense.

It's anything north of the River Trent, I thought. I'm interested now, in a "how shall I waste time at work today?" kind of way.

Lived in Newcastle-u-Lyme for a time and considered Crewe as the starting point....massive rail junction, just into Cheshire etc etc

Cheshire, Derby & Notts are the Midlands. Anywhere North of them is the North.

Derbyshire and Notts I'll give you as Midlands, but not Cheshire

Hmmmm, Staffordshire is definitely in the Midlands, and so are places like Crewe & Nantwich. Stockport is in the North, I'll give you that, and I'd say that Warrington is just about where the North starts.

So I'd concede that the border is the M62 through Cheshire.

Perhaps our Stoke friends could tell us if Northerners have similar conversations about where the South starts, and what the consensus is.

Had a similar deb8 at work a few months back and found this:

http://sasi.group.shef.ac.uk/maps/nsdivide/index.html

Quite an interesting study but some odd conclusions with a diagonal line leaving places as north as Lincoln in the 'south' while Hereford is classed as 'north'. They justify using nice coloured diagrams on a range of indicators, but nothing completely solid.

Hmm defintely in the north by the time you're into Cheshire. All starts getting a bit weird once you've reached Whitchurch
