Backpass

by Barry the bird boggler » 22 Dec 2010 07:38

Just though some of you might like to know that there's an article on the Simod Cup run with Martin Hicks in this quarter's issue of the excellent retro (ie. when football was proper and SKY hadn't wrecked it for everyone) football magazine BACKPASS. Available from WH Smith and other magazine shifting places of purveyance.

As soon as I saw this thread I had a nightmare memory of Shaka Hislop picking up a backpass.

Jerry St Clair Hoof !!!!!

Simond Cup final was anything but. Rumour had it that there was a players rebellion, led by ex Watford boys Smillie and Les Taylor. They decided that as we were at Wembley we should play proper passing football, rather than our usual long ball kick and run. And the rest is history as we rang circles around Luton. Met some of their supporters leaving afterwards who were asking whether their team could have their ball back/be allowed a kick!

Next league game was Ipswich (if mem serves me right)
Gilkes up front trying to get to crosses that the Ipswich centre halfs picked off all day. What a waste. We played Luton off park !
Happy days, Jerry

It was glorious stuff especially after such a bad start. The game was over after an hour. To think they beat Arsenal in the Milk Cup Final a couple of weeks later.
