When were we last shit?

by Jerry St Clair » 04 Jun 2011 11:40

Is it possible there are teenage Reading fans who can barely remember a truly shite Reading team?

Clearly 1998-2000 was the absolute nadir of modern Reading history. But have we been dump since then? And I don't mean the odd poor performance. I mean a truly, consistently crap team.

A case could be made for the 2003/04 team. Coppell had just taken over and we embarked upon, what could best be described, as an inconsistent season. I recall a hat-trick of 3-0 defeats over xmas which could easily have lead to Coppell being given the boot. I'm sure some would make a case for the 2008 relegation side, but given everything that team had achieved previously, surely they are exempt.

Rodgers had us second-bottom, 4 points from safety having played one more game.

I remember my first Reading game was 0-0, i didn't see Reading score for 8 games and we didn't win for 13. I also remember when we lost 3-0 3 times on the trot. I can't what season though. I'm 17.

We all secretly dream of a team of Gurneys, Kromheers, Bodins, Braysons and Scotts.

I would say we were only truly shit before we bought Matt Robinson. That for me was when it all changed and we've not been shit since.

03/04. We lost those three games around Christmas, one to Wimbledon! A certain Jobi McAnuff scoring!

The previous game we lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace. Their fans were singing "Coppell is a Palace fan" and we were booing him.

Curiously that game contained 5 of the 106 team.

While the team wasn't completely shit, our spell of one home league win in a year was as terrible as anything seen by fans in our history.

If you are talking about talentless then you'd have to go back to the Tommy Burns era. That team didn't underperform. It was just poor.

Anything 'masterminded' by Terry Bullivant was pretty bad.

We've been shit for the grand total of about five seasons in the last 16 years. 95/96, 96/97, 97/98. The Burns half of 99/00, half of 07/08 and half of 08/09 and half of 09/10. And most of those we weren't truely awful, just disappointingly poor.

So the last time we were shit for an entire season IMO was 97/98.

Rodgers, Bullivant & Burns - names for the Reading FC managerial hall of shame.

That really was terrible, iirc correctly, they looked like a team of average 12 year olds and were utter relegation fodder. They still managed to run rings around us despite that though. I have very very rarely been ashamed to be a Reading fan, but having taken my family to see that game on Boxing Day I was ashamed to have inflicted that dirge on them and that my team could perform so badly.

other than the spell under rodgers i think our younger new generation of fans havent yet seen a truely awful reading side. you have to go back to 98 relegation to what is now league one, and then the season of struggle after that. since pardew came in weve always had an exciting season with much to play for. spoilt some would say!!

I still dispute the fact we were s**t under Rodgers, there were certainly s**t performances but as a whole the team was alright and seemed to slowly be turning the corner. So in answer to the OP I'll have to say 1998/99

I shudder just thinking of that Wimbledon game, sure we've been worse in other games I've seen before and after this, but for some reason this one really sticks out.

Van der Kwaak
Gurney
Bodin
Kromheer
Gray
Holsgrove
Houghton
McKeever
Crawford
Brayson
Scott

What a team that would be. Van der Kwaak, the only goalkeeper we could have bought who would be worse than Simon Sheppard.

I will never forget that, Jobi took 3 shots in a row eventually bloody scoring! The 2 before the eventual third were blocked and continued to fall straight back to his right boot.

Wimbledon were CLASS that day. If I recall, that was their first, and possibly only away win all season. LOL.

I remember the east stand singing, "you're not fit to wear the hoops to Coppell", and taking the p1ss out of Owusu whenever he got the ball, as we were 3-0 down.

Possibly the most embarrassed I have ever felt after an RFC game.
