Aldershot rivalry

by TBM » 25 Oct 2011 23:31

Apparently the 'shot fans were singing "we hate Reading" tonight in their tie against Utd 8)

I reckon we should educate our younger fans to pick up the rivalry with Aldershot again - much better than using Oxford or Swindon (who dont give a shit about us)

Oh yes, Oxford and Swindon do give a shit about us, just that they haven't played against us for a few years.

Ask an Oxford fan who their main rivals are and they will say "Swindon" - ask a Swindon fan who their main rivals are and they will say "Oxford" - ask an Aldershot fan who their main rivals are and they will say "Reading"

Really don't like Aldershot. Absolute shithole of a town (and that's coming from a Bracknell boy) and the fans I've come across are fit for the Jeremy Kyle Show.
Came across a group of about 10 of them after QPR away last season in The Walkabout, saying how they had come to "pay us a visit" after their game at Brentford LOL. Was completely off my tits but I'm sure the self made ring leader who the words were exchanged with had ALOLdeROFLshot tattooed on his neck. Rumour then spread that they smashed up O'Neills next door which turned out to be bollocks. Gr8 Birthday though from what I remember!

Not really got anything against Aldershot tbh. Don't dislike them any more than any other club.

You could say the same with Bournemouth fans though although we couldn't give a toss if they hated us.

If we do come across Aldershot again surely a chant of 'We forgot that you exist' would go down well with the locals.

For those of you too young to remember, the correct spelling of the team from north Hampshire is Aldershit. Weren't you at EP or The Rec in the early 70's matches?? Happy daze ! Literally on one occasion.

Even though I wouldn't be able to be there to enjoy it I am hoping for a FA Cup draw away...if they can make it to the 3rd round.

It's 20 years since we have played them so that's a whole generation of fans who have no idea what the rivalry was like in the 70's and 80's. It was the first fixture you looked for when the list came out. More often than not we got the better of them on and off the pitch. The 4-0 game about 79 loads of fights police helmets flying everywhere and a false leg!

JC, you may have been one of the many that came to my rescue in 84 I believe. As a young 15 year old I was following around with Southbank lads at the time. Remember about 20 of us going into a pub in Aldershit with a larger group of Reading following behind.
Within a few seconds of going to the gents, I had been confronted by a group of squadies, seconds later I was laying on my back on top of the three toilet cubicles that had collapsed. I was in too much of a daze to witness the events afterwards until a chuckling Reading fan came to give me a hand up.

I believe the BBC highlights reel on their website may have mentioned Aldershit... obviously it was very quickly corrected...

"You`re so loud, you sound like Aldershot", is this song still chanted at a small away following these days? :D

TBF to them they did come looking for reading fans and found a group in O'Neills. The rumour of them smashing the place was simply a case of them throwing a bottle and it managing to crack and break!
