Defensive signing?

by Gordons Cumming » 03 Jul 2012 09:53

We've got a winger, centre forward and a midfielder, but I'm guessing we now need strengthening at the back.

Are we needing someone to replace Pearce or just as back up?

Must be on his way soon...................?

LanercostRoyal replace our player of the season?

.......In the championship

His lack of pace will be a problem in the premiership, until he is more experienced at reading the game better

We're going to need someone.

They wont keep fit and free of suspensions like last season that's for sure.

Morrison isn't the answer obviously.

If Pearce is to continue to develop he'll need a strong and experienced Centre back next to him, one who is preferably quite quick as well.

That would be the much more experienced Ingimarsson who wasn't quite as slow and definitely wasn't as ponderous? I don't recall that at all.

Can't believe I'm actually reading this.

Peace will be just fine next year - We do need defensive cover, but not defensive replacement. Christ on a bike - you can't change too much, there won't be any cohesive consistency between much of our squad if we carry on like this.

Maybe not a replacement, but getting cover is no use. We need to improve, and he needs competition.

Fine line between cover/replacement/competition.

Agree though, we can't just go and change the whole squad. They're not that bad, and it's not the Reading way.

What sort of player will be good enough to compete in the Premiership but be prepared to act as cover?

For me, I think we need two full backs and a centre back.

Alex Pearce was our stand out player the whole season. Played every single game, Chipped in with some goals and was solid! He is still only 22 years old, if he keeps going the way he is then it wont be long before top 6-8 clubs come sniffing for him. Outstanding player. His pace is the only downfall.
Cannot believe I am actually reading that some of you want him replaced! Mr. Reading FC. Future captain, traditional old school centre half!

I don't know, but we have more pressing defensive priorities - like a left back!

Anyway, you don't have to get them in as cover, you merely ask them to wait their time. As a player picks up a nock / suspension, you play the "cover" and they stake their claim to starting, and then person who has dropped out, waits until another opportunity to be presented.

We need at least 3 quality, fit center backs, but to suggest we should be replacing Pearce is crazy. Complimenting him, challenging him - of course! But replacing... Bloody stupid.
