Ark Royal
reading_fan I always think when this thread rolls round that we could produce a good book "A Fans Guide to Reading FC", given all the anecdotes over the years about specific games. And with the likes of Ark and some of the older posters we could get a good historical element to it too

+1 to this.

+2, but I can't see any publisher being interested. The only people who'd remotely care in reading it are the people who contributed to it.

My first ever game was at home to Doncaster on the last day of our record breaking season (85-86 I think). Trevor scored both goals in a 2-0 win.

Oh, and I was at the Tranmere game when Friday scored that goal. I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Me and 48,000 other loyal royals and half time entertainment from Elvis Presley.

Same; Or a site to try to capture it, the history of the club, etc from the fans perspective........ since we're embarking on a new historical era etc.

Do you want to narrow it down a bit, Jim? Or do you mean IMMEDIATELY after the war?

We won the first home game 10-2, the second 7-2 and then the rot set in ...

Not my first game but I remember playing Blackpool in the early 80's and Alan Ball was player manager. The only time I got to see one of the boys from 66 play at Elm Park. I'm guessing Nobby Styles and Bobby Charlton would have played in the Watney Cup game? Any others ever play at Elm Park?

You would be right Far Canal. My first season would have been 1946/7 but for the life of me I can't remember who we played. Would have been 13 then but was allowed to sit on the wall behind the Wantage Road end, one policeman on a chair behind the goal! I also went to Elm Park during the war when the Americans put on a game of their football, weird.
Happy days of mud and dubbin.
Also, before the war remember being in Broad Street on a Saturday and being able to hear when Reading scored.

December 1988 - Reading 0 - Leeds 1. Standing on the South Bank at Elm Park. A dull, uninspiring loss to match the grey drizzly conditions. I've been utterly hooked ever since

Reading played a Dutch team during the end of war celebrations but I cannot remember the Dutch town's name. I was there but most of my memories have faded over the years.

Cohen in Lge Cup in 64? Moore, Hurst, Peters in Dick Spiers / Denis Allen testimonials? Moore certainly did - as did Greaves. Charlton (R) played in the Watney Cup game, Stiles did not.

Southport away at Haigh Avenue. Late 70's/early 80's. Not sure when they went out of the league off hand, must of been very close to it being their last season. Could have been 0-0 or even a loss, memory isn't what it used to be blah blah.

Simod Cup Final. Started going to every home game since the day Madjeski took over. Fulham I think and Archie scored. Early 90s sometime

There was a 1-1 up there in 77/78, which was their last season in the league. Although that was the game rescheduled twice [and Paul Black was the only away fan to make it to?]. Was a few years before I was born though.....

75/76 we won 1-2, 74/75 they beat us 2-0. If any of that helps. In fact, we've never had a 0-0 with them.

I do like Haig Ave. The Terraces and Atmosphere when in the home end [the Jack Carr, behind the goal opposite to the away fans] reminds me a bit of Elm Park. R.I.P. good craic for the awaydays with them too, great crew, besides the ringleader who is a total dick..

Wolves at Elm Park in 1997 as a six year old, we were 1-0 down the whole match against that fat scottish bastard McGhee until Lovell grabbed a brace in injury-time to send the whole place into raptures. I'm very proud to be able to call this my first match, after which i completely collapsed into love with the club.

That was my first game as well, and I was also 6 years old then!
