42 is the answer to everything.

However, I'll take goal difference one better than the team that sit in 18th come full times on the final day.

Well now I've seen everything. Trying to change the terms of the Rougeometer? That's not what it does!

37 or 38 points will be required in order to avoid relegation.

In the last 9 seasons - which is largely the period over which the big 5 or so clubs really started to dominate the PL - the points to avoid relegation have been as follows:

In 7 seasons out of 9 - 38 points has been enough

Of the other two once you needed 39 and once 40.

So 38 should be enough most years, but 40 has been safe every year since 2002/3.

So 6 wins and a draw should do it for Reading.

Surely you've looked at the points gained by the 17th placed team which is different to the number of points required to stay up. For example, last season the 18th placed team only scored 36 points so you either needed 37 points or 36 points and better goal difference.

18th placed team points last 10 years
----------------------------------------------
2002-2003 42 points
2003-2004 33
2004-2005 33
2005-2006 34
2006-2007 38
2007-2008 36
2008-2009 34
2009-2010 30
2010-2011 39
2011-2012 36

Looks more promising to me.

Number 1 comes first. Think about ourselves and no-one else.

I think the points tally is going to be really low this year, its normally 3 from 4/5 but now theres about 7 teams in the mix.

I would take a punt at 35/36 being enough!

Five wins and three draws from the remaining fifteen fixtures should be good enough to survive with 37 points.

If you take either the last 10 years or all seasons since the league became 20 clubs then the numbers required to avoid relegation are (strangely) exactly the same. The lowest was 31. the highest 43 and the average 37

Our magic number is 45 as that's the number of points we need to be certain of finishing outside the bottom 3, this is obviously moot as teams around us have to play each other but ballz to working that out

Magic number to stay up is way harder than magic number to go up/win title

The magic number was easier to guess last season when it was about going up. Trying to sort out a magic number when its about avoiding going down, is more tricky. You have to guess 7-8 other teams results....

This season it will be low, as QPR are still in the mix. So other teams will take points from each other and reduce the total number.

Why isn't there a pole.. No pole, and it's not even worth my effort.. But since I'm here, I'm going to go with 36 to be safe, third from bottom will get 35
