Tokyo Sex Whale It is a great achievement to be 5th in the form table, however, I think the majority of us accept we are better lucky than good at the moment.

There is a saying that "class is permanent, form is temporary" - and our level of class will show at the end of the season.

Thanks, this is precisely the view I was referring to.

Those who had us relegated weeks ago cling desperately to elements such as luck and "our level of class will show at the end of the season" :P when those with no agenda, that would be "the majority" blessed with a moderate knowledge of the game, know that for every bit of good fortune that has come our way this season there has been at least one example of misfortune and that citing luck as the main element of our form in one of the best leagues in the world is nothing less than laughable.

They will know, too, that "class" is about far more than a player's transfer fee and that Hope Akpan and Adam Le Fondre had sufficient to ensure we gained a point against the current European Champions with no element of luck involved in either goal.

you dont get a massive turn around in luck that extends over multiple games.
anyone who thinks this run has nothing to do with the team or manager is a moron imo

I have the same gut feel but it doesn't stop it being a spastistics faiLOL.

Only time will tell whether it's a genuine improvement or a dead cat bounce and we'll then see a regression to the mean.

Rumpole I flipped a coin 1000 times, at one point it landed heads 8 times in a row! Unbelievable! Must be something special about the coin!

^ this.

Surely the truth is somewhere between the extremes of luck v class.

Stats show that we are 6th in terms of points gained when losing (15, three wins, three draws) and 19th in points lost when winning (20, four losses, four draws). So we are characterised by volatility.

Did we lose 20 points through bad luck...or through naive defensive organisation?

Can we sustain the last ditch wins? We are passionate and energetic enough, but surely the five or so wins we need would be a lot easier to gain if we don't have to keep coming from behind.

As I see it, the team has made significant progress - tactically and in terms of performance. I can't help feeling that we cannot sustain the "miracle" comebacks, and that more progress is yet needed in terms of defensive organisation (see Fat Frank's header, for example).

im not saying that statistically it will be considered significant. im saying that to me, watching the games, its not luck. any more than it was bad luck that we lost seven in a row or whatever

and the 50:50 flip of a coin is so far removed from the complex and multifactorial result of a football match as to render the comparisn flippant and pointless.

You do appreciate that thinking we will be relegated does not equate to wanting us to be relegated don't you? Or that thinking we will be relegated is not necessarily a criticism of the players or manager?

Despite a wonderful little points spurt, I still think we will be relegated but will be delighted to be wrong.

And the only way it can be robustly demonstrated to not be luck is.......through spastistics. :|

Comparing our squad to everyone else, just putting up a decent fight to stay up is a monumental achievement. Staying up would be quite extraordinary.

It's full credit to the squad and manager that we go into February still competing.

I suspect we'll go down too.

But the Baggies/Chelsea games were such stunning experiences to be part of, I'm determined to love the ride and not be bitter at the end.

I treasure the decency and calm about our club.
