royal_cornwall Question for the Stato's ........This is a bet settler

Who's been Reading's most successful Penalty taker from the 70's on? Must have taken a minimum of 5

Trivia Question
As there ever been a professional player who could take penalties with either foot and did so in a competitive matches?

Corrected this as above as it wouldn't let me edit it a 3rd time

Trevor Morley is surely our best penalty taker in the last 30 odd years. Missed 1 from about 15-20 and he put the rebound away anyway. So we scored from every pen he took.

Quinn actually had a fairly poor record, I can think of 3 he missed.

Only time I've ever seen someone score a header from their own penalty.

I think Morley's probably got this sewn up.

reading_fan Also, on the flipside of the original question, does anyone (Cube/strap) have any stats on our keepers and what their penalty saving record is like?

I am sure one season Steve Death saved around 5 out of 6.

Regarding takers I am sure Deano never missed one - very accurate always low and hard in both corners.

Birmingham at home in the FA Cup (live on TV  , saved by an outfield player subbing for the sent-off keeper)

Bradford away the year later, the home crowd had been given him (as an ex-Bantam) grief all match, his miss got a bigger cheer than any of Bradford's goals

York away in 1994 - a lovely balmy evening, we were really shit that night, and I can recall vividly (as I type this) watching the ball soar over my head on its way out of the ground. That was the evening that Curtly Ambrose reduced England to 40-8, we were listening to it on the radio after the match and we lost two wickets in between pulling into the pub car park and getting the first round in. True story.

Caskey I remember missed a few for us, Oldham at home 99/00 springs to mind as one.

Morley did indeed only miss one penalty, home to Huddersfield 96/97.

Kitson missed a couple for us as well, his first was away at Millwall 05/06, then of course Sheffield Utd on Valentine's Day the same season.

Did Senior ever take penalties for us?

No he didn't the only time I remember him taking one was against Oxford at home in the cup. Oxford had a real good team at the time but we battered them that day. He missed we drew the game and got trashed in the replay.

Is that 2.5 with each foot? or 2 with each foot and one with his head? (Is it legal to take a penalty with your head?)

I remember going to the replay, entering the Manor Ground a little late to a roar from the home fans as they scored, only to find out we were 2-0 down already after not much more than five minutes.

Steve Hetzke took a mean penalty as did John 'Minty' Murray. Remember Murray's two at the Town end in that game against Tranmere and Hetzke's almost taking the Gillingham keeper into the net with the ball.

Bumped into Hetzke day after Neil Webb scored penalty against Wimbledon when he superbly sent goalie wrong way and asked Hetzke how did he do it, especially as Hetzke was the regular taker but out injured, and he said Webb admitted he mishit ball.

These three players rarely missed.

Stuart Beavon seemed to miss more than he scored but that Wembley one must rate as one of our best hit spot kicks ever.

Deano rarely missed too - if he ever did - helped in Simon Cup run.

Alfie seems to be v cool too.

I'd go with Morley too. Forgotten the one he missed.

Senior probably only took 2 or 3 for us.

Steve Mautone was the best stopper IIRC in terms of % saved. Our keepers have been shit at penalty saves for years. I think Marcus managed about two!
