Royalee Anyone but Cummings

Kelly's a lot worse at left-back! Slow and clumsy, pulls everyone back because he can't keep pace with them. Absolute liability.

To be fair to Cummings he was solid up until the weekend when almost everyone had a stinker.

The thing is with Cummings is he's far too slow to move the ball and doesn't overlap which screws the midfield as well as being suspect defensively. He's rubbish at both aspects of the game whereas at least Kelly can defend (Hillsborough aside) but can't attack and Gunter can't defend but can attack.

Both have their faults but Cummings does get forward more than you suggest, to be fair. I'm not sure about Kelly's defending either. I want to like him, but he terrifies me when he plays. Roll on Bridge's return!

Gunter can't defend but can attack.

except he starts getting the jitters once he sees the half way line.
Personally, although Guthrie plays some good passes - I'm beginning to wonder (like some others have said) if he is the actual problem.
Everything seems to have to go through him - but he sits far too deep (often in the way of Gorkss and Pearce) and every pass is sideways or back so there is no immediacy.
I'd like to see a game where he is out just to see if something changes.

I'd imagine it might be a little bit like Huddersfield away.

I understand where you're coming from, but no-one else is comfortable on the ball like he is - so all we'll get is WHACK!! and back it comes, and GOALLLLLL - for the opposition.

I'd rather keep him in the side. Our problems are more the players not creating space or making runs for Guthrie to exploit! On the rare occasion someone did make a good run on Saturday (Drenthe left of goal), Williams decided to stop and pass it backwards... No awareness of what's going on around them.

Good lineup but do we really want obita at left back with drenthe in front of him against a top side who like to hit teams on the break?

Need pace in the middle of our defence. Vardy will tear us a new one otherwise. Obita is a mega risk, but we want our full backs pushing up and offering width and Cummings doesn't do that on the left.

.................McCarthy
...Gunter, Pearce, Gorkss, Cummings
............Williams, Guthrie
McCleary...... Drenthe.........McAnuff
................Pogrebnyak

Fed, Kelly, Akpan / Tshibola, Obita, ALF, Sharp, HRK.

Probably not far off our best side as well... Bridge, Morrison and then Baird and Karacan being available for midfield too.

Gunter has actually been surprisingly alright at centreback, so it's an interesting idea popping him in there. And he'll hopefully be more inclined to bring it out a bit when he can, but less inclined to take risks and play silly passes like he can do at full back.

I'd drop Gorkss for him though if it was to be tried.

Can't believe that 3 people have included Robson-Kanu.
I think this is a very important game that we can't afford to lose (not exactly true if we win unexpected games in the future) because if we fail to get points there and at 'Boro we are suddenly mid-table.
With defence being particularly important I would play Kelly in one of the full-back positions with Baird (surely he isn't going to be out for ages?) centrally alongside both Guthrie and Williams plus McCleary and Jobi right and left and then keep my fingers crossed.

This squad is not really very good and if only Akpan could be what Brian thought he would be, and the same with Blackman and if only we had 2 left-backs rather than just one in the squad and if only we had another option for Pearce and.............
This is a badly assembled squad and what we have left is hope (not as in Akpan) and the power of prayer.
