What's the best atmosphere you've ever experienced.....

by WoodleyRoyal » 10 Feb 2015 14:03

watching Reading (couldn't fit that bit in the title). Thread stolen from mags in AE.

A few, and difficult to pick a single one

Leicester away 06

Derby home 06

Cardiff away playoffs 2011

Surprising addition when you think about it Peterborough away 2001

Wigan Home play off semi 2001

Middlesbrough home first day in the PL

For me it's the Wigan home in 2001 the first time we'd really filled the stadium and the two late goals wow just wow makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up just thinking about it. The atmosphere was electric all game even though we were a goal down. The last five minutes is for me the best ever moment being a Reading fan.

Blackburn away last season, when the whole of the away end stood up and sang "If Ya Gettin' Down" by 5ive, from start to finish.

Last 8 minutes vs West Brom at home 2 years ago.

That third goal going in was one of the very very few times that the whole stadium shook.

obvious answer in Leicester away in 2006.

From memory, the home games in the run-in to the end of the 75/76 promotion season.

More recently, the away end at Forest when we won 4-3. Rollercoaster.

That Forest game was pretty mental, we ended up taking it in turns to sing EIEIEIO up the football league we go.

Elm Park: 2-1 win over Bolton on a Friday night toward the end of the 94/95 season. There were more people in Elm Park that night than live in Reading, or at least it felt like. Southbank went utterly spastic when Nogan scored the winner.

MadStad: 2-1 win over Wigan in the play-off semi final. I remember looking at the clock on 86 mins and thinking I couldn't believe the season was going to end that way. When Forster scored the winner I could feel the stand moving underneath my feet. One of the very few times Reading fans have lost their collective shit at that ground.

Away: 1-1 against Leicester to send us up to the Prem. If you weren't there, you weren't there.

Agree with Mags on the Bolton game. A very special night. It was rabid on the Tilehurst when Nogs scored. The Wolves game immediately post-McGhee the same season and the Plymouth game in 85 also spring to mind.

Just watching the highlights of the Wigan PO semi makes the heart beat faster. It must have been something else to have experienced it first hand.

Wigan Play Off Semi

Amazing atmosphere towards the end of the match. Its a bit of a cliche to say "the stadium was rocking" but........if ever there was a home Reading match for that saying to be used then this was it.........

At the Mad Stad - probably when us or United visited. Out sang you the whole game, in fact we didn't stop. Pretty sure you may have mustered up a couple of songs.

i thought about putting one, but we would have had a shambles of 'what about Plymouth away in 1954/55 season'

there are too many to mention, like others have added forrest away, the Bolton game, the wolves games at elm park etc etc

and also it's what you've experienced, who am i to decide what you or others like/dislike

Away end at Southampton a couple of years ago was quite tasty.

In the Barcelona end at Stamford Bridge when Andres Iniesta sent them into the Champions League Final at the expense of the rent boys. It was the first time any noise had been heard there.

Wigan H (PO Semi)
Villa H (FA Cup Quarter)
Southampton A (2011/12)
West Ham A (2011/12)
Chelsea A (2012/13)

Outside of Reading:

Switzerland away last year with England.

All the obvious ones already mentioned so I'll add a few others:

6-0 West Ham on New Years' Day. Fcuking brilliant.

1-1 v Cardiff on Boxing Day 2005 was it?? They went 1-0 up & a few tw@ts got on the pitch only for Fed to equalise in the 96th min & us goad them for half hour after the final whistle. Horses on the pitch the works. Lovely stuff.

EDIT. Outside of football it has to be Super Saturday at the Olympics. As cheesy as it sounds probably the best thing I've ever experienced in my life. Don't think anything will ever top it.

One that sticks out was the Good Friday 1-0 win vs Forest in April 2003. Think it was probably due to the fact that we were both vying for play offs and Forest packed out that away end too

How has the thread got this far without any mention of Brentford away in 2002?

Cureton's goal, players celebrating promotion on the pitch, and probably my first taste of success as a Reading fan. I guess not having a roof meant a fair bit of the atmosphere escaped, but it was still one heck of a party.
