Brian Knows

by Maneki Neko » 02 Feb 2016 11:27

a thread to keep a record of all the players, managers and football people that brian knows:

Sean o'driscoll

“They have a manager who knows his way around football,” added McDermott. “He's been in the game all his life and I actually played with him in 1982 when I was on loan at Fulham.

“Sean has also been at Liverpool recently and I know him well.

Tom Bradshaw
Meanwhile, McDermott played down links with Walsall's highly-rated striker Bradshaw, saying: “I know him - I’ve watched him a couple of times. There has been speculation about Tom and I think he’s a good player.

yann kermorgant and George evans
“Obviously I knew Yann and George really well and there are two or three more I know really well who I would like to sign.

Connor washington
“I knew Conor Washington really well and I would have liked to have signed him, but we couldn't do that deal.

Tom bradshaw
“I know Tom but he isn't on our radar,” said Royals' boss

yann kermorgant
McDermott does not believe will be a problem for Kermorgant.

“Not with him,” said Reading’s manager. “I know Yann really well.

connor washington
I don’t know him to love him. I know him as a player, I've watched him so I know him well. I think he’s going to be a good player for QPR.

Darragh mcanthony
Yes I know Darragh - he’s a nice guy. He’s a friend of mine actually.

steven whitaker
“I know Steven well and he’s a good player,” said Royals’ boss. “But he’s a Norwich player.”

George evans
I know him, I know he has that capacity to really get on the ball. It was a tough start, but I thought he did smashing.

yann kermorgant
“I’ve known him for quite some time now and I’m really pleased he’s come.”

deniss rakels
“I look at him [Rakels] and what he can bring. He's an international player and he's someone we can work with, so it's great that he's coming.

“Did I know him? No, but I know a lot more about him now.”

Steve sidwell
Royals’ boss said: “I love Steve Sidwell, he’s a good friend of mine. I’ve known him a long time, he’s a good guy and a good player.

and finally, for some balance:

Carlos Carvalhal
“I don’t know him, but I look forward to meeting him on saturday"

Can you please list the player/manager in question next to each quote? Or at least have a long list at the bottom of the post that can be added to? Thanks.

Implication here is that Brian doesn't know anyone in the rest of the squad.

I have noticed Brian saying this, but perhaps he does know them. Last time he was here he got a lot of out-of-the-blue signings right--the likes of Griffin, Khizanishvili, Harte, Connolly, Leigertwood, Afobe ... scouting is about knowing players. The more players he knows, the better for us.

I love the recent article where Brian was talking about his time as chief scout and helping players settle in, he said he went shopping at Tescos with Andre Bikey and his missus.

I'm hoping he has similar anecdotes for all of the players he knows, maybe he scouts them like Louis Theroux making a documentary and accompanies them to the supermarket all the time firing questions at them to gauge what type of character they are.

although Afobe was a bit useless when he played for us ... but I guess you can say he spotted the talent

I could not disagree more. He was a key part of our promotion push. He might not have scored, but he was very lively and effective, I thought.

Brian is great at judging young talent and potential transfers. He built his entire reputation on being a scout.
Can someone edit his wikipedia page so he's not in a oxf*rd Leeds kit, please.

On the subject of scouting, I am not entirely impressed by Steve Shorey. He talks a bit jargony and is I think behind the foreign purchases, starting with Carriço. I wonder if he should take part of the blame for some of the dodgier buys towards the end of Brian's last stint, as well as for some of the oddities since?

I do not doubt that he knows them.
I do not think him knowing them is a bad thing and i look forward to finding out about other people he knows in due course.

Knowing me, knowing you (ah-haa)
There is nothing we can do
Knowing me, knowing you (ah-haa)
We just have to face it, this time we're through
Breaking up is never easy, I know
But I have to go
Knowing me, knowing you
It's the best I can do

Key? Really?
Noel Hunt, Alfie & Jason Roberts were key strikers. Afobe showed some promise but only made 3 appearances and I wouldn't go as far as to say effective or key.
Even Cywka won a penalty.
