Top Flight ...Reading football, the 3rd oldest club in the world...

The what?

Are we not the 3rd oldest football club in the world behind Notts County and Stoke City? Did I get that wrong?

I think it's massively wrong yeah.

Edit: Always used to be the oldest club south of the Trent. I think that should be oldest professional club still going, south of the Trent.

Wiki tells me that Notts County, Stoke, Forest, Chesterfield and Wednesday are all older than us, and that;s just in the English professional leagues let alone the rest of world or non-League.

Ok, well we're the 6th oldest football league club

1862 Notts County (Oldest club in the current Football League)
1863 Stoke City
1865 Nottingham Forest
1866 Chesterfield
1867 Sheffield Wednesday
1871 Reading

Seventh when you add Sheffield FC (1857) who are playing in the Northern League Premier Division which is basically Dvision 8 of the structure.

I thought it was common knowledge that Sheffield FC are the oldest independent football club?
(Seems there are older clubs but they're all attached to other organisations, like the Cambridge University team)

Notts County are the oldest professional club and we're the only other club to have played in every FA Cup. As County won it one year, we have the record for most defeats in the FA Cup.

If you're going to include Sheffield there are a number of other non-League clubs who would be older than us too.

It's fair to say we're pretty old and one of the oldest around though, but nowhere near the 3rd oldest in the world.

Yeah, we're not even in the top 10. There is Worksop Town, Cray Wanderers, Bradford Park Avenue.

Since football was invented in England we must be older than all clubs outside our shores? Who would be the oldest club in the rest of the world?

We're not in the top 20 either. Both Marlow and Abingdon, Harefield United as well as Stranraer, Kilmarnock, Hallam FC, all came before us.

I believe Kjøbenhavns Boldklub are the oldest continental football club, formed in 1876.

Edit: Actually, looks like Dresden in 1874

Lima CFC were founded in 1859. Strangely, a fair few South American clubs survive from before 1871, but the oldest continental European club are Dresden (1874). Le Havre were founded in 1872 but didn't play football for several years.

Interestingly, 1871 is the year that gridiron was first codified. We're as old as a major American sport.

I have found some info about football clubs set up by English Ex pats in Paris, Buenos Aires, Lima (Peru) and Australia during the 1860's. But I don't think those clubs still exist.
