Tony Le Mesmer Time for annual monitoring of 2 proud club records.

13 wins from the start of the season
106 points in a football league season

Given that 14 wins in a row is the most any team has ever achieved at any time in English Professional football, I very much doubt the 13 wins from a season's start will ever topple.

As for 106, it will go, and maybe this year. A big Prem side getting relegated when they really shouldn't is always going to be the biggest threat.

Another possible record to go is the consecutive unbeaten league matches in the second tier. Newcastle won their last 17 games in 2010, so if they win their first 17 this season, we will technically lose it (just as we took it from Liverpool as theirs was split over two seasons I believe). Although we could rightly still claim it in one season.

Norwich and Aston Villa have a rather harder task in needing 29 and 30 matches respectively. Of the promoted teams, Burton need 29, Wigan the full 34, and Barnsley 28. No Idea about any of the teams that were in the Championship last season however, so there may be a couple of them that have a chance of taken it relatively early on.

I assume you mean consecutive games undefeated. The record in the second tier is 33 set by us and Liverpool but it seems a bit meh that we even consider that a record, overall record is all that really matters and Arsenal have that with 49 games.

Tony Le Mesmer
Winchester Royal In 1946 Doncaster won 33 games, drew 6 and lost 3, giving 105 points under the current system. This was achieved in a 42 game season, giving a better points per game record over the course of the season than the 106 team.

In a season where half the male population in their 20's were either dead or injured, this probably gives Doncaster an unwanted record of having the most amount of deserters in their town. And 105 < 106.

I suggest the key factor is that mining was a reserved occupation for the last few years of World War 2. So places like Doncaster would have had a regular pool of players available. If you look at the league table that season there are a few other mining towns doing better than their average.

Couldn't we just have a separate "If my Aunite had balls she'd by my Uncle" thread for this annual arguement?

I'm eagerly awaiting Kes' contribution around the third page.

Newcastle will be everybody's Cup Final this season. I expect even the likes of Burton to push them.

They may well go up as Champions, just with fewer than 106 points.

CountryRoyal Does anyone see Newcastle dropping 32 points?

When put like that it our record does look vulnerable!

However, I am not convinced that a team like Newcastle who are under pressure will storm the league as much as people think. I fully expect promotion but not without a fight.

The Championship is full of teams that over the last 2-3 years have been fighting and narrowling missing out on promotion:

Derby
Brighton
Norwich trying to get back up (And likely to do so I think)
Sheffield Wednesday
Villa trying to bounce back up
Ipswich
Cardiff

I could go on... basically every game is so unpredictable. Teams will be pushing them to the limit and as another poster said, they're everyone's cup final.

3 points lost already. So still on a par after 1 game with the 106.

I can't see Newcatle losing only one more game this season.

They are not a 'team' like our 106 boys.

The championship clubs will raise their game for Newcastle as well. They need to play much better if they are going to achieve something this season. 106 record not in danger in the strongest league for years.

Great to see both Newcastle and Villa start with a defeat.

Norwich started very well, though

They did, was impressed from what I saw. Should say that I have a feeling Blackburn will be very bad this season.

Maneki Neko you don't suddenly go from being utter dogshit and getting relegated to walking a division like the championship right from the off.
imo

Not helped by the fact the Blackburn fans were calling for Coyle to be sacked as soon as it was announced he'd got the job. Hardly a case of all pulling in the same direction there methinks.

Record Watch 16/17

The 13 wins in a row from the start of the season record already down to just 5 teams:
Prem:
Man U, Man C, Hull and Chelsea all 2 wins from 2

League 1:
Bolton 4 wins from 4

United v City is the first game after the international break so at least one of them will lose their 100% record, and Chelsea make the third team left with 3 out of 3 so far.

and they play Utd on their 9th game - so if both have it then it'll be down to just 1 team

Anyone know the record for the earliest date on which the 13 wins was mathematically safe ?
Presumably it could be as early as the first day of the season but suspect it usually stretched to about game 6 or 7
