Roy Beerens - Unsung?

by genome » 18 Feb 2017 15:09

I don't really see people singing the praises of Beerens all that much on here, or Twitter.

But a quick bit of research shows all of his goals have been match-winning and he's won us 15 points so far this season - without which we would be 12th.

His defensive contribution leaves much to be desired, but do you think he deserves more praise?

No but he needs one. I suggest simply to the tune of Tom Hark "Roy Beerens, Roy Beerens, Roy Beerens, Roy Beerens" etc.

He does always seem to score important goals.

I thought he was excellent when he came on against Brentford and really got involved helping out the defence - which isn't always the case

The foolish old football philistine behind me has one that he keeps going throughout games - something along the lines of:

'Get stuck in Beerens...
Beerens you bottled it again...
Beerens put some effort in...
Beerens you're useless!"

He's good - scores useful goals and puts in the odd tackle. When we get these players from middling European clubs, I always fear the worst due to memories of Marek and Drenthe, but Beerens has been a pleasant surprise and coped well with the demands of the Championship.
If he was perfect, I guess he would have still been in Hertha's first team, or way beyond our price range, but I am happy that he seems to be a good player who is playing well.

I love this kind of statistic. Totally ignores the fact that someone else would have been playing if Beerens wasn't there (probably far more productively?)

I didn't say anything about someone else playing. He could have played and not scored.

But carry on with your conjecture

I think the thing with Beerens is he bottles a lot of challenges/headers and goes missing for large periods of the game.

Out of interest how many assists does he have?

Typical winger.
Soft in defence, goes missing, but has the beatung of a full back, can whip in a good cross and scores a few important goals.

Don't think he hugely fits our shape... better in a traditional 4-4-2 with two strikers to aim at when he hits the byline.

Decent impact sub though. I like him.

Considering the ridiculous sums being splashed about in this division, he's been a bit of a bargain for 500k all things considered

He's prob not in my first11, but certainly a good option at times

Thought he had his best game v Fulham a couple of weeks ago. Really threatened when going forward and beat his man nearly every time. Shows what he is capeable of but like a lot of wingers, can be very inconsistent. It's a shame not all of them are like a certain Mr G. Little

I like him though and he seems to get on with the rest of the team and he does seem to score goals that win us points.

Probably his biggest problem then. If he contributed more assists I think he would be thought of in a better light.

Is Beerens still adapting to the Championship and the position he's playing? - He looked alot sharper/fitter at the start of the season.

He's far from a bad player and even on current form he does offer something to the team and scores goals, I don't see why there's so much negativity - maybe some just have a leftover negativity from Hal Robson Kanu's time at the club that they need to release.

I disagree. I think his lack of pace precludes him from being the typical winger and he'd struggle in a 4-4-2. He's very technical and uses that to get past full backs, I don't really ever recall him beating anyone for pace.

I like him in a crowd, he finds a way out and gets a pass in.
