On the 1st January 2021 new transfer regulations will be introduced for U.K. clubs following departure from the EU
For clubs in the Premier and Football League this means
- No club will be allowed to sign any overseas players who are under the age of 18
- Clubs will be restricted to no more that 3 overseas signings under the age of 21 per season
- Clubs will be restricted to no more that 6 overseas signings in total per season
- All overseas players wishing to move to the Premier or Football League must meet a “points” criteria laid out in the Government Body Endorsement (GBE) proposal which is based in no. international appearances, perceived quality of the selling club, no of domestic league and continental cup appearances
So basically clubs won’t be allowed to sign the latest hot property overseas 16/17 years olds and are going to be limited to only 3 signings under the ages of 21 from overseas. What that’ll probably mean is the bigger clubs will look to sign more young homegrown talent earlier so from Reading’s perspective protecting the investment in the likes of Olise, Boyce-Clarke etc. becomes even more critical to stop losing youngsters for next to nothing.
It appears that there won’t be any effect in the overall numbers of overseas players in a club’s first team squad but the application of the points system on EU clubs will presumably make it harder to sign some of the more “obscure” talent on the continent.
One would hope similar restrictions will apply to overseas clubs wanting to get the next Danny Loader.
