Ignoring skill and ability - who is your favourite ever Reading player?

by Sebastian the Red » 11 Jan 2022 09:49

Good morning everyone

As we all know, footballers these days are all, despite far superior skill levels, inherently unlikeable, focussed on fashion and watches and inappropriate relationships with Instagram influencers.

So, on a purely emotional, gut-feeling level, who is your favourite ever Reading player? Who do you just adore regardless of the talent they actually brought to the team? Who won you over? I'm not saying "Who is the best ever Reading player?" (because the answer to that is probably a suspected paedophile). I'm asking: "Who do you love?"

For me it's probably either Parky or Ingimarsson. I also have all the love in the world for Hahnemann.

Has to be the one and only, Neil Shaka Hislop for me. Closely followed by Nicholas Forster.

Darren Caskey is probably the player that made me fall in love with Reading FC. Strolling about the pitch, pinging balls around and popping FKs in the top corner with your first touch, what's not to love?

Honourable mentions:

Martin Buttler
Nicky Forster
Glenn Little
Adam Le Fondre
Kaspars Gorkks
Andre Bikey

Jimmy Quinn is probably my favourite ever player. I remember meeting him as a kid and being in awe of him.

Embarrassingly recent but Meite is such a passionate and likeable chap he has to be up there.

Adie and Gooding because I hear them every week and they're likeable folk too.

Going further back though I quite liked Mautone if only for his antics worshipping the Southbank on his first (?) game for us.

Jeff Hopkins. Used to go watch the team train at Sonning when i was a kid, he called me and my mate over to have a kick around with them at the end of the training once. Neville roach went in goal for a penalty shootout too. He gave us one of the training footballs and got it signed by a couple of players. That will forever go down in my memory and he will always be my favourite player for that reason

Yakou Meite for me.

Honourable mention for Alex Fernandez for being very complimentary of the club despite never really playing.

Cureton - just had that swagger
Bikey because he was so unpredictable and hilarious at the same time.
Little for obvious reasons

Shout outs to Armstrong, Convey and Shaka.

Quinn,Senior,Gilkes....are all up there but my all time favourite is Kevin Dillon

Just that old school midfielder who put in a shift but still looked like he was ready to kick the shit out of anyone who looked at him

Kebe and Bikey are the two who immediately jump to mind but they were also very very good players. Kebe in particular is underrated as being a pure speed demon when he was also extremely industrious and quite technically gifted.

A bit shit but fundamentally lovable - Matthieu Manset.
