Brian 3.0

by Rax » 13 Feb 2022 21:11

Ok - I'll put my cards on the table - I want Brian McDermott back to manage our failing club.

He's the second most succesful manager in our history, has already offered to "help out" despite shabby treatment on two previous occasions.

Would bring the feel good factor back, also he can't lose - we can't get any worse as a team!

Would cost little money and I'm sure Wally is available too as a no 2.

Get the dream team in :D

Think it’s been said quite a few times but would happily take him until the end of the season and guaranteed DoF role afterwards given he wants it.

If the club were to do that it would not only address Paunovic but also help concerns regarding Kia.

Brian’s too nice. We need someone like Warnock to kick this lots backsides. They need to shape up.

I'd have him back at the club - just not as manager.

It's got to be one of Warnock or McCarthy if we want to survive.

Elm Park Kid We don't deserve him back.

No we don't, and that goes for me too who wanted him out before; but times change. Love the guy, but he just couldn't change his style for the PL. But this is different. Now that togetherness and hoofing to the channels is exactly what we need.

IN for BMac or Warnock.

The "hoofing to the channels" (brilliantly put btw) worked because of Shane Long who would chase and chase - Puskas would have been ideal for this, I also remember lots of times when Noel Hunt would take a ball to the corner flag if we were defending a lead and literally have lumps kicked out of him!

Meite can fill both of these roles.

He was just being nice to everyone when asked if he would come back. He wouldn't want to come back to this mess.

Well if it's Gilkes I'm sure Brian would be a friendly voice on the end of the phone to help him out. That's good enough for me.

I wouldn't mind having him back either tbh of course.

Really don't want a Reading legend as manager. Would love him back at the club, but for manager we need someone who we wouldn't feel guilty for wanting rid of if things went badly. I would hate to feel like that about Brian

Gilkes as interim is a given. Any local journo could assume that. It should be for a few games while we try and get someone on board. If they allow Gilkes the reigns for any longer than that then we're done.

You never know.

Plus, would he be our first black manager? That'd be cool.

If Brian came back as manager I'd be right behind him. I'd rather he was DoF though, he would excel in that role, he's got a great eye for a player to suit a system.

Brian until the summer to keep us up and move upstairs, then get Ainsworth in this summer! Failing that get Warnock in until the summer.

Agree with this. Would love to see McDermott at the club, but not a long term manager. If we appoint him now, even on an interim basis, there's a very real possibility he'd add a relegation to his CV, but he couldn't be blamed for it.

Can you appoint a new manager while the old one is still in place or am I missing something?

Appointing Warnock would be the final straw for me, I have been a fan for over 50 years but could not support a team with him as manager. He is the antithesis of everything Reading once stood for.

Personally would love him back. I thought both sackings were very unfair. In 2012 he achieved a miracle getting us promoted with a rag tag squad and we only added a few more players that summer and so we had virtually zero chance of surviving in the PL in 2012/2013.

And in 2015/2016 he took us to safety and I do wonder how things would have turned out if he had been able to rebuild that summer. Instead we sacked Brian and brought in Stam - who played the worst most boring football I can ever remember under any manager at RFC. Yes it was nearly successful if we had won the play off but was truly awful to watch. And ever since the play off failure in 2017 the club has just gone ever further downhill.

Bring Brian back.

Took us to safety in 2015/16? We weren’t too far off the playoffs when he joined. We ended no where near. Definitely would have persevered that summer rather than sack him but he didn’t do a good job in his second stint. He struggled with a fairly talented set of players
