MATCHWATCH : West Bromwich Albion (a)

by Sutekh » 30 Dec 2022 22:30

When : Monday 2 January 2023, 3pm
Where : The Hawthorns, Halfords Lane, West Bromwich, West Midlands, B71 4LF
Capacity 26,688

About the only good thing of this return fixture is the fact that Reading won’t have any more league games to play against WBA this season and, together with Norwich and Swansea, the Biscuitmen will therefore have completed their league fixtures against 3 of the most awkward, and usually non-rewarding sides, that they have to face in this division, as soon as it’s possible for a club to do so.

Thankfully Reading have picked up their form a little with 10 points from the last 15 now but this one is probably going to be a game too far, but the Biscuitmen have shown some decent spirit and grit I the last two games and if the Throstles do have a bit of a misfire then there might well be an opportunity to sneak something.

WBA are an awful lot better with Carlos Corberan running things on the pitch. Things may not look particularly brilliant of the field (have taken a £20m loan over 4 years from their Chinese owners to try to avoid a fire sale of players) but on it the ejection of Bruce earlier in the season has turned the Baggies from a team that was difficult to beat but couldn’t win to a team that’s difficult to beat and does win.

Form since the ex-Huddersfield boss arrived is played 9, won 7 and lost 2 which is 21 points gained out of the last 27 available so this is going to be as hard as it gets and will need some sort of miracle for Reading to emerge with anything. In addition WBA haven’t conceded a goal at home in the last 4 games, all of which they’ve won, and they’ve only actually conceded 2 goals in the last 8 games of which 7 have been won.

The WBA squad is packed full of quality, with midfield probably being the best in the division. Firstly there’s the known John Swift factor, then there is the perennial Reading thorn of Jed Wallace followed by Turkish international Okay Yokoslu, who is starting to show some form, and if that isn’t enough Jayson Molumby and former Reading target Tom Rogic are there to help make life very difficult. Karlan Grant, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Darrell Dike are all pretty useful up front too so quite how Reading can counter all that is going to be quite a question.

Kyle Bartley is the only WBA injury problem while hopefully Reading won’t have picked up any more issues on Friday so will “just” be without Tyrese Fornah, Sam Hutchinson, Liam Moore and Ovie Ejaria.

Historically

This will be the 19th visit to The Hawthorns for a league game and it’s a right tale of woe with a catalogue of defeat after defeat stretching all the way back to the 1920s.

Reading have managed to produce a fairly consistent run of defeats (14) from their 18 previous league visits with the only sojourn being a couple of wins back in the mid 1980s of all times. So it’s now 12 league visits and 34 years since Reading last lowered the West Brom colours in a league trip to the Hawthorns, 1-0 in February 1988. Consequently the goal difference is a bit cr@p with 11 goals scored and 36 conceded.

Perhaps the management should somehow persuade the players it’s a cup game as Reading have only lost 1 of the 10 games played.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Maybe a late addition but SKY say this is a red button game. Good news.

That is weird. All Championship games now scheduled for 2 January are on the red button service but only two games (Blackburn v Cardiff and Huddersfield v Luton) get the same treatment on Sunday, great consistency from Sky there.

Hopefully we'll play better than we did in the reverse fixture. We were abject that day. We'll need to play very well to get anything from it.

Should definitely be:

....................Lumley
......Yiadom, Holmes, Sarr
Hoilett, Hendrick, Loum, NGW
.......................Ince
..............Carroll...Meite

Although Sarr needs a good performance to retain his place much longer.

Of the 6 Championship games on Monday at 3pm, all i can see is that Norwich v Watford is on SKY and the matches at West Brom and Stoke are on the red button.

Going to be tough, but not a great deal of pressure riding on this game now so we can just play and try and enjoy ourselves a bit. Picking up 4 points from these 3 games is a good return based on where we are and our history against these clubs recently. But not a lot to fear as we are in decent form and they are strong, but not unbeatable.

If we want to give ourselves belief of a play off push, then getting a result or better should give us some hope that way, especially with the league being as open as it is.

Team for me:

Lumley
Yiadom Holmes McIntyre
Hoilett Hendrick Loum NGW
Meite Carroll Ince

Could also have Ince just in behind both Meite and Carroll, or replace Meite with Long but obviously play a bit narrower there.

If Meite is not 100% as suggested by ince wouldn’t mind seeing Long and Carroll up front

Both knocking on but still have decent energy levels

Sorry my web link was out of date, Blackburn, QPR and Norwich games are all live on Sky while Cardiff, WBA and Stoke are all red button services - seems strange to only pick 3 games for the Red button over the 2 days rather than offer the service to all clubs. Oh well, the fact remains WBA v Reading has been selected so those with a subscription to Sky have an option to watch.

Can’t the home clubs say no to red button on certain occasions still ?

Dann and NGW start

Joao back on bench with Sarr and Holmes has disappeared altogether so probably injured.

Possible still some residual issues from his concussion a few weeks back?

Good to see Dann in, his experience could be key today and NGW deserves his start, offers an outlet down the left which could be vital as we are likely to be pinned back a lot.

Personnel means we could move fairly seamlessly from 5-4-1 to 3-4-3 to 5-3-2 to 3-4-2-1

Think we may start 3-4-3.

Lumley
Yiadom Dann McIntyre
Hoilett Loum Hendrick NGW
Meite Carroll Ince

Swift starts for WBA and for those that want to know, WBA line up is Palmer, Furlong, Pieters, O’Shea, Yokuslu, Swift, Townsend, Wallace, Dike and Phillips. Asante, Rogic and Diangana are all on the bench.

Surely only the top 2 have a stronger XI on paper than that. Tough afternoon.

Happy for Dann. Receives quite a lot of negative reviews on here with his injury issues not really helping himself or ourselves but when he was in under Pauno at the start of last season, he was probably our best defender, although the bar was low. The big question is how match fit is he for a test like this at West Brom and given his age will he be able to cope.

Holmes' might just be a lot of game time catching up with him and he may have just tweaked something, hopefully it's not something long-term and he can slot back into the side in the cup next week.

Happy to see NGW start, fought his way into the side. If he can perform today then hopefully we can integrate him into the side in for the remainder of the season most of the time.

Can`t say I`m happy about chucking Dann straight back in, it`s similar to hutch against QPR and we haven`t seen him since, why not wait till next weeks cup game to get him back in?
