MATCHWATCH : Burnley (h)

by Sutekh » 12 Apr 2023 03:00

When : Saturday 15th April 2023, 3pm
Where : SCL, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Though the battleship chain and its two ton anchor has finally been cut and there is now some positivity about the place that the club will at last be able to sail in the right direction, the fact remains the visitors are already promoted and unbeaten since November so the chances are very high that this will remain pretty much a foregone conclusion and a feared new manager “splat”. But the important thing is that there is positivity again and that won’t be quashed by a foregone conclusion.

The expected toxic and negative atmosphere that would have helped the Clarets though has been drowned and that in itself will help the players, and hopefully the fans too, to be loud and proud and like a 12th man. Reading are currently on a run of 3 draws (wow!) in 8 while in comparison Burnley have won 16 and drawn 4 of their last 20 league games and though Readingh should be owed something after the refereeing joke at Turf Moor it’s a shame you can’t rely on that happening.

Burnley have threats all over the pitch. The biggest of which are Nathan Tella and Anass Zaroury. OK so they’ll probably struggle next season but in the meantime Burnley”s, and other clubs of their ilk, parachute payments and ability to keep much of a PL season’s squad after relegation have destroyed the integrity of the division and rather makes a mockery of clubs being able to compete on a level playing field.

Burnley have one injured player in Darko Churlinov while it seems Reading pretty much have a whole Chamionship team injured, however it will be interesting to see if there’s any sudden recoveries!

Not sure what to expect for this one from Reading but then Burnley’s expectation that they can just pick up the ball after it bounces off Carroll will also have disappeared. The good thing too is that Noel knows the youngsters really well and hopefully won’t be adverse to putting them into the team rather than saving them for 10 minute (at best) cameos while slagging the players off and telling everyone that there are too many injuries and no options. Hoping too that Noel will work with the players in training this week and look at the way Burnley play and develop a flexible gameplan or two so everyone understands their roles (and hopefully any punts at Andy’s head will be by way of crosses rather than just hopeful clearances) - might we also hope for some work being practiced on set pieces now that the management has changed?

If you’re going to this one then be positive and turn the noise right up, also make the life of the officials difficult after all the atmosphere at places like Anfield and Old Trafford can be worth a decision or two going the “right” way, especially after the embarrassing mistake made in the reverse fixture.

Referee

Oliver “2 wins in 16 games” Langford

Option 4 is severely limited for this match, as it`s the 3pm Championship game chosen for worldwide viewing.

Key things for Noel to do:

Get pace in the backline.
Play it through midfield, not over it.
Use the positive energy of the young players.

I see two options v Burnley. Go defensive, but heavy in the counter, or get in their face and hope they have a bad day. I think I prefer the latter, but suggested line up for each:

Defensive:

.........................Lumley
..........Yiadom, Holmes, Mbengue
Abrefa...............Loum................NGW
............Casadei............Fornah
..................Azeez
............................Ehibhatiomhan

Would like to go with a stronger striker, but Long's injured and the forward needs to be quick and energetic.

Offensive:

........................Lumley
Yiadom, Mbengue, Holmes, NGW
.........................Loum
.............Casadei.......Fornah
...Azeez...............................Camara/Ehib
.........................Joao

Nothing to lose, I don't expect Burnley to take the foot off the gas just because they've been promoted.

He only missed the 4 penalties and given what happened up north earlier this season would therefore be the perfect fit from the FL for this game.

This. Forgot to mention that if Burnley win and the Blades don’t on Saturday then Burnley will win the title. However the Sheffield United v Cardiff City fixture kicks off at 12.30 so hopefully that result will kill off any chance of Burnley getting the title on Saturday before a ball is even kicked in this one).

This is a free hit, think and hope Noel Hunt will want to go at Burnley and therefore fill our team with as much pace as possible. If we lose but give it a bloody good go the supporters will have no qualms and its a great opportunity to set ourselves up to play on the front foot which could stand us in good stead for the more winnable games that are coming up.

We'd need pace for the break seen as we aren't going to see too much of the ball I'd imagine. Azeez might help with that, outside of that not sure who else we've got in attacking areas that will cause them problems that way. Be interesting to see if he starts Carroll or not this time around as he was probably our poorest performer on Monday.

In snooker parlance, it's a "shot to nothing"
I reckon Noel will have a right go with this team

We will run them close and may even take the lead before letting in a couple of late ones to lose 3-1.

Everyone will still be happy even though the teams above us all pick up points.

From the club video of todays training session it looks like Ovie has made a recovery from his "injury".

Around the 2min mark? Can't be 100% sure as you only see him from the back, but it certainly could be him. Also been mentioned on twitter that it could be Jay Senga.

Yeah, could be. Build and hairstyle looked uncannily like Ovie but couldn't tell properly because the back was turned.

I don’t think that’s Ejaria

Was it just me or was nearly every player shown either Fornah or a U21 (Ehib, Abrefa, Craig, Azeez mainly)

Of course everyone on twitter is convinced it is Ovie and is calling Ince every name under the sun without any firm confirmation.

Yeah, if it turns out it is Ovie, something serious has gone on behind the scenes and been hidden away, which is never good, but the mob is certainly out.

Senga is a tall lad apparently so would make sense if it was him with the context of the rest of the video

The guy standing with his back to us on the left in the group of 3 talking to Hunt with Fornah facing the camera at 2 mins is 100% categorically NOT Ejaria. I'm absolutely certain.
