Most important goal in our history?

by Loafer » 19 Apr 2023 21:13

What is it?

Could Carrolls be the most important goal we have ever scored? (If we stay up)

Iconic yes, important no. We had seven games after that one to secure promotion, the importance of the goal should be measured by the occasion. As mentioned above, Cureton against Brentford is the one.

For context, had we not secured the 2nd spot behind Brighton that season, and following on from the lack of momentum we had in the last 9 or 10 games of that season, did anyone 100% believe we would go up that season via the Play Offs?

Cureton's goal was the difference between us playing in the Premier League or being another Swindon/Oxford.

Yep, especially after the capitulation the season before as well.

Yep. To date, Cureton's call is the biggest sliding doors moment for the club. If we had lost that day, the world may have looked very different.

The most important goal in the club's history may get scored in the next 3 games though.

Curo's equaliser at Brentford has stuck with me more than any other goal

I watched it on the big screen at the Madejski beamback, I was only 12. Got soaked in beer as most of it went upwards when he scored.

Imagine having to ask the question in the first place. It is obviously Cureton's goal.

For THAT Curo goal….I hear you…..but for me, it was Gilksies penalty v Coventry back in ‘88, Reading at Wembley !!! the rest became history.

It also meant nothing, in reality. We'd have been promoted that day even if we'd lost.

Iconic =/= important.

Agree with Cureton at Brentford - the club's future was at a real "sliding doors" decision point that day. If he'd not scored that day, who know what might have happened to the club.

^Agree, and has been mentioned once or twice here already.

Men of a ‘certain age’ will never forget (Gilksies penalty) and our first ever trip to Wembley…..something that never ever could happen to ‘lil old Reading back then.

Times have changed, and ‘everybody’ plays at Wembley these days….but wow…what a (late) night that shoot-out that was.

Boyhood dreams fulfilled.

(“Reading of Wembley” ….)
