Relegation permutations

by Sutekh » 30 Apr 2023 08:40

Which set of results will unfold?

Rotherham and Huddersfield lose all their games in hand

- The above results is the best we can hope for as these outcomes would mean Reading could survive with just a point at Huddersfield.

Because of the GD situation, Rotherham effectively need just a point against Middlesbrough to be safe against relegation

- The Rotherham game is largely irrelevant to Reading unless Middlesbrough can get a big win to seriously damage Rotherham’s current 8 goal advantage over Reading.

Huddersfield get MORE THAN THREE points from their games in hand and Rotherham also get 1 point or more

- Reading would be relegated at about 3pm on Monday 1st May (even if Rotherham were beaten Reading would be going into the last game hoping Wigan would beat the Millers while also getting a 5 or 6 goal swing in GD).

Huddersfield get 1 or 2 points from their games in hand

- Reading will need to win at Huddersfield.

Huddersfield get 3 points from their games in hand

- Reading will need to win at Huddersfield and may need to win well depending on the GD situation at the time.

As things stand today a Cardiff win will dump Huddersfield back into the bottom three!

All we can hope for is that we have something to play for next Monday. Even if it is hoping Rotherham don’t beat Wigan and we need to win 4/5-0 at Huddersfield…we are pretty certain to go down anyway…but to go down before we even play again would be awful.

I think I'd rather we got relegated without kicking a ball than it happen next weekend.

Huddersfield supporting mate of mine is convinced they are losing their two games in hand

He reckons Cardiff will want to confirm their status today, and Sheff Utd (who battered Preston yesterday) will want to get over their Yorkshire rivals.

Football fans and their pessimism ey?!

Also need to remember the goals scored rule. Huddersfield have scored 4 goals less than we have, so let's hope they don't get a couple of 3-3 draws either. Otherwise we'll still need a win at Huddersfield.

I hope the game plan is to try and win and not play for a draw. As our defence isn't good enough to keep a clean sheet.

The Sheffield game is much tougher for Hudds than today...

Also think overseas managers sometimes don't fully respect the integrity of the league; was good to hear Heckingbottom's comments after the Preston game that they were going full out for 2 wins to end with.

Yep, I don`t think Sheff utd will think twice about sending their neighbours from 30 miles up the road a step nearer to the drop, the away end will be sold out and the players will want to be in the boss`s plans for next year in the PL.

If they get a couple of 3-3 draws they'll be two points ahead of us so a win would be essential.

No. Any two draws would put Huddersfield two points clear of Reading, meaning Reading would have to win (because they would be two points ahead if Reading)

If Huddersfield DL or LD they will be a point ahead. This also means we would have to win.

Only if Huddersfield LL their two in hand … then a draw would be enough

Now effectively means:

Reading now must win at Huddersfield to have any chance.

Huddersfield- one point is enough for survival, but they are still relegated if they lose both their remaining games.

Rotherham- one win will be enough for survival. One point would all but guarantee survival, barring an 8 goal swing. If they lose both then assuming a Reading win, they are relegated.

We ought to adapt that song the Wall fans sing but make the signature line ‘No one likes us, no one cares,’ as a sort of ironic wail into the wilderness that is being a Reading fan.

Huddersfield’s goal difference is now 2 better than Reading so Reading would need to win by 2 clear goals. However as they still have to play Sheffield then they’ll either be safe or be back to having a 1 better GD meaning Reading just need to win. The ONLY other resolution is if Rotherham get thrashed by Middlesbrough and then lost at Wigan in which case Reading still have to win. Still 0 wins away since November and a current away run of 1 draw and 8 defeats in 9 played gives a real challenge.

I went to that Hull game and we were lucky to nick it! Without that then Wigan away in September would have been our last away win
