MATCHWATCH : Millwall (a)

by Sutekh » 05 Aug 2023 20:48

When : Tuesday 8th August 2023, 7.45pm
Where : The Den, London, SE16 3LN
Capacity : 20,146

And so onto Millwall for an irrelevant (at this stage) cup game against a team from a higher division who will, hopefully, no doubt field their second string.

While in all liklihood you'd expect Reading to do the same, I actually think that Selles will select a strong XI as he seeks to continue to try and "gel" many of the "first team" together, though Carroll may be rested after playing the whole 98 minutes on Saturday. Think this approach to the game will be especially true if a raft of signings rock up on Monday.

Still at least it's a game where the result doesn't matter really though a first win in 14 competitive games (19 across all games), since February would be nice!

Referee

Lee Doughty

Previously

15 Mar 22 > Bournemouth 1-1 Reading
28 Aug 21 > Huddersfield Town 4-0 Reading
25 Nov 20 > Millwall 1-1 Reading

Historically

Last time away at Millwall in the League Cup Reading lost 4-3 and went out 5-4 on aggregate. That was on 4 Sep 1984 and was a relief to many Reading fans at the game as Reading kept taking the lead in the game which was a rather worrying thing to do at Millwall back then when teams took these cup games seriously.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Would like to see:

.................Andresson
Abrefa, Dean, Mbengue, Carson
...Azeez, Wing, Rushesha, Camara
.....Ehibhatiomhan, Vickers

Subs: Bouzanis, Yiadom, Abbey, Senga, Craig, Knibbs, Carroll

Still a fairly strong XI, but rotates the squad to get some of the new signings who weren’t ready game time.

And importantly, protects as many of the first XI from injury as possible.

Vickers + 10 others. Don't even care who the other 10 are.

The most irrelevant game in recent memory, nobody in their right mind can give a toss. Play the youth team, get beat 4-0 and concentrate on Port Vale next Saturday.

Under normal circumstances I’d agree but I’d use it to get a few of the lads some more “pre-season”, Wing for example.

Definitely irrelevant in terms of the result but very impt for us to get some minutes into legs etc

A half decent performance wouldn’t go amiss either

According to ITVs highlights programme, Reading are currently on a run of 14 games without a win (true) but that is apparently a club record. Anyone able to confirm if that is correct or just ITV talking out of their bottoms?

Strong team please. Maybe with Dean starting. Maybe rest Carroll and bring him on after 60 minutes? Start Vickers and Eb?

I can`t remember a worse run, wouldn`t surprise me in the slightest, even if we win this it`s only league games. Feb 18th sure does feel a long time ago.

There have been a few non-winning runs off the top of my head that must be close (without checking the stats)

Terry the taxi 1998 after Christmas when we went from mid table to bottom
Branfoot 1987-8 when we went down
The spell after Pardew took over following Burns's sacking (L1) 2000ish?
Stam season 2? That run after the Burton win in Jan was quite long

There have been a few non-winning runs off the top of my head that must be close (without checking the stats)

Terry the taxi 1998 after Christmas when we went from mid table to bottom
Branfoot 1987-8 when we went down - 2 wins and 16 defeats in the last 18 league games so not one long winless streak
The spell after Pardew took over following Burns's sacking (L1) 2000ish? 13 league games without a win in a 17 game run but the club managed 2 cup wins in that time (ldv and fa cup)
Stam season 2? That run after the Burton win in Jan was quite long - that miserable run that ended Stam was 21 games in total but included 1 cup win (Stevenage) and 1 league win (at Burton)

So the current 14 league game run with nothing does currently look to be the longest.

It's the equal longest. Reading also went 14 league games without a win between 30 April and 5 November 1927.

But you need to remember. Pep Giardiola and Jurgen Klopp couldn’t have done better than Paul Ince.

I reckon the team will be something like:

CBC
Mbengue - Dean - McIntyre - NGW
Camara - Wing - Rushesha - Knibbs
Ehib - Vickers
Subs: Bouzanis, Yiadom, Holmes, Craig/Senga, Savage, Azeez, Carroll

Basically most of the players who started on the bench on Saturday coming in (plus Dean), especially those who didn't have a full pre-season.

No, he'd simply be happy with a selfie with his favourite ex-player - Simon Church

He also likes Nelson Abbey

Would be a cardinal sin if we do not rev up the pun count
