MATCHWATCH : Stevenage (h)

by Sutekh » 16 Aug 2023 11:46

When : Saturday August 19 2023, 3pm
Where : SCL Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Well after Tuesday Reading appear to be back to square one in terms of team selection for this one as now we really have no clue whatsoever who will be playing beyond Button and WiFi. Good news though is that the seemingly more exciting and useful youngsters are all in with as good a shout as the more senior heads (and just maybe if some of those more senior heads continue in their absence other clubs might see that and try and actually buy one of them).

Anyway it's Stevenage next and don't think this is going to be anything other than another quality opponent. They may have only been promoted last season but in Steve Evans you have the proverbial "nothing else but 100% commitment allowed" manager together with a set of players who win games and are used to winning games. As a promoted team they will not have any fears about losing (esp. against the perceived bigger sides in the division) and this is being borne out with league form that has seen a superb 100% winning start to the season.

Only Watford in the LC and Cambridge have scored a goal against them so they're unfortunately likely to be well organised defensively, and while not running away with games they are doing what it takes to get ahead in games and stay there so this is possibly going to be the hardest game yet.

Luke Roberts and Jamie Reid form a striking partnership at this level that is as good as any other, if they misfire then former Brentford striker Aaron Presley is waiting in the wings. Defender Carl Piergianni offers threat from the back, the only unknown is what their team selection will be on the day as Mr Evans has been rotating his player selection.

At least there's some good news for the home team at last. On top of an injury list that remains at only 2 victims, Reading at least have the prospect of one new signing (attacking midfielder Ben Elliott) making his debut, the possibility of a second signing before the game (winger Paul Mukairu) and some optimism back once again after collecting their first points of the season on Tuesday (though the problem of lack of creativity and striking threat sadly remains fairly obvious).

Referee

Anthony Backhouse

Previously

No previous games

Historically

Like Cheltenham Reading have no previous league games against Stevenage but have had several cup games. There's been one in the league cup (I'm sure many will remember that pathetic showing from last season) and four in the FA Cup. Stevenage, though, have a much better record in Reading in those games than Reading having won twice to Reading's sole victory in an FA Cup 3rd round replay.

For the record the side that capitulated to Stevenage in the League Cup the last time they rocked up was: Bouzanis, Guinness-Walker, Holzman, Abrefa, Holmes, Fornah, Clarke J, Loum, Tuma, Ehibhatiomhan & Leavy so may be some of those names will be up to regain a bit of face on Saturday.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

It won't be this team but it is what I'd go with:

Button

Mbengue
Dean
Abbey
Carson

Savage
Elliott
Wing

Knibbs
Ehibhatiomhan
Azeez

I think he'll go:

....................Button
Yiadom, Abbey, McIntyre, Carson
...Azeez, Wing, Savage, Knibbs
......Ehibhatiomhan, Carroll

But oxf*rd knows really. You don't change a winning team etc, but it wasn't totally convincing and Stevenage are a much tougher challenge.

Agree - Steve Evans' sides are always very physical and direct. The ball will be in the air as much as they can make it possible.

Tough call this. I’m not sure why Rushesha and Craig aren’t in after decent displays, let alone bringing back Carroll and co

Fair chance being dropped may have ruffled a few feathers as well - maybe in a positive way, may be not in some cases

Only think Button, Abbey and Ehibhatiomhan are nailed on starters but think it’ll be

Button
Mbengue Binden Abbey Carson
Camara Wing Savage Knibbs
Ehibhatiomhan Carroll

CBC, Vickers, Yiadom, McIntyre, Hutch, Dean, Elliott

Leaving out Holmes, Azeez, Rushesha, Craig, Rushesha, NGW, Bouzanis who will all feel hard done by and Smith, Ejaria, Dorsett, Abrefa, Senga, Jahmari and John Clarke who I reckon are all not fully fit

Going to be a challenge here keeping everyone motivated / not burned out

I don’t think Wifi and Carroll can really play together but we still need some experience up top. Possibly partner Carroll with Vickers or go 4-3-3.

Hoping the good lord smiles on Reading esp. as the club are doing all they can to get Him on board by fielding Dean, Abbey and Vickers. Shame Simon Church retired, could we add Ian Bishop to the coaching staff perhaps?

It's the other way round for the FA Cup - two wins for Reading (one a replay) and one for Stevenage.

One of those FA Cup wins was at Stevenage by 2-1 back in the very first meetings between the clubs. At home Reading have played 3 cup games against Stevenage and been beaten twice (1-0 in the FAC in 2010 or 2011 and 2-1 in the LC last year) the other home game was a 3-0 romp in a replay back in 2017.

With Mukairo in the mix, makes it even more difficult a selection

Wonder if it’s time to do some early rotation. Ie give Vickers or Savage the week off

I think that’s the general way to go with this squad - keep it fresh and not overload the young lads. Wing/Knibbs can prob keep playing every game

I can't see Mukairo starting straight away on Saturday, but who knows. I'd like to see Wing get a start this weekend and possibly Elliot if he's ready.

Need to be sharper up front if we want to win this today.

Definitely - and Knibbs needs to start standing out (in a good way) a bit more

So, just the one change then. Wing nowhere - bust up, rested or injury?

McIntyre
Azeez
Elliott
Mukairu
Dean
CBC
Yiadom

are on the bench

Presume NGW, Holmes and Carroll will not be involved again until the transfer window shuts.

Presuming injured but then he’s not exactly contributed anything so far so don’t think he’ll be missed
