Reading's Penalty Shoot Out Record

by Brum Royal » 30 Aug 2023 12:33

After last night's penalty shoot out loss, it feels like yet another occasion when it comes to us losing a penalty shoot out. I've been watching Reading since 1990, but I can't recall us winning too many shoot outs in that time, compared to a few defeats. Does anyone have a record of our penalty shoots? I'd guess we'd be something like 3 wins and 6 or 7 losses in the time I've been watching us, but before I start looking on HNA records and the like I thought I'd see if anyone has already looked this up or has the numbers available.

I want to say someone like Doncaster in the 2006/07?

IIRC Peter Maté scored the winning pen.

Here are a couple we remembered on the way home last night -

Carabao Cup, 23 August 2016
Reading 2–2 (a.e.t.) Milton Keynes Dons
Remember seeing Obita scored the decisive penalty

FA Cup, TUE 04 FEB 2020
Cardiff City 3-3 Reading (AET) (1-4 pens)

I wouldn't read too much into last night's shootout. They're young excited nervous kids. Was always going to be a tough ask and they'll learn. Penalties are always going to be a lottery.

I think that might have been Darlington, although I'm not 100% certain

Franchise FC Coventry anyone !!!!

Only us oldies remember Gilkesey and that successful shoot-out that took us to Wembley and our only win there! Wasn't it also our latest finish to a game ever?

Think overall we've won more than we've lost, it probably seems the other way because of 2017 when we were 3-1 up

Can remember running to The Victory to catch last orders as the game ended past 1030pm, they stayed open until midnight in the end

Penalties are definitely not a lottery, but I doubt either team put in much prep for last night tbh. It's not like a play-offs shoot out where your season hinges on it. So I expect the lack of preparation mixed with inexperienced players was decisive for us

I'm not using this for apportioning blame or anything like that, more just a general interest in the overall trend in Reading's shoot outs

And another against Cardiff :

FA Cup, 4th round, Feb 1998. Nick Hammond was the hero on the "night of the spanner." ISTR an announcement in extra-time saying something like "For Cardiff fans going home by train - you've missed it."

We lost to Northampton in the League Cup about a decade ago, IIRC.

As far as I can make out the full record on penalty shoot outs is this:

Won
Lost

  1. Feb 1993 - Exeter City (a) (League Trophy thing) L 4-2
  2. Feb 1998 - Cardiff City (h) (FAC4) W 4-3
  3. Sep 2001 - West Ham (h) (LC2) W 6-5
  4. Jan 2003 - Walsall (h) (FA3) L 4-1
  5. Sep 2006 - Darlington (h) (LC2) W 4-2
  6. Sep 2008 - Stoke City (a) (LC3) L 4-3
  7. Sep 2010 - Northampton (h) (LC2) L 4-2
  8. Aug 2016 - The Franchise thing (h) (LC2) W 4-2
  9. May 2017 - Huddersfield (n) (POF) L 4-3
  10. Aug 2019 - Wycombe (a) (LC1) W 4-2
  11. Sep 2019 - Wolves (a) (LC3) L 4-2
  12. Feb 2020 - Cardiff City (a) (FAC4) W 4-1
  13. Aug 2023 - Ipswich Town (h) (LC2) L 4-1

So Reading have played 13 of the things and won 6, seems to be a record that's pretty much what you'd expect for any team really.
