MATCHWATCH : Exeter City (a)

by Sutekh » 17 Sep 2023 16:28

When : Tuesday September 19 2023, 7pm
Where : St James Park, Stadium Way, Exeter, EX4 6PX
Capacity : 8,197

Back to Exeter less than month after the largely promising but unrewarding performance in the league.

This is for the Associate Members Cup which is currently branded as the English Football League Trophy. Reading once won the equivalent Full Members Cup back in 1988 and many will remember what a great day out that was, if not the run to final, so I'm hoping the club take the competition seriously as it would be a real achievement for Reading to get another day out at Wembley that they might actually be able win.

Don't know whether Exeter will see it as a distraction and play a weakened side from the league game but hopefully their rather brighter start to the league season will encourage them to do that.

Reading will certainly be without Smith and the, forever injured, Ejaria. Whether anyone picked up any knocks against Bolton is unknown as yet.

Competition Format

Player eligibility

Each FL league club MUST play a minimum of four qualifying outfield players in their starting XI. A qualifying outfield player was one who met any of the following requirements:
  1. Any player who started the previous or following first-team fixture.
  2. Any player who is in the top 10 players at the club who has made the most starting appearances in league and domestic cup competitions this season.
  3. Any player with forty or more first-team starting appearances in their career, including International matches.
  4. Any player on loan from a Premier League club or any EFL Category One Academy club.
  5. A club can play any eligible goalkeeper in the competition.
  6. Any player out on a long loan term at a National League, National League North, or National League South team can play as long as the loaning team agree to allow the player to return for the match.
For invited teams (the U21 sides)

  1. Minimum of six players in the starting line-up who are aged under 21 on 30 June 2023.
  2. Maximum of two players on the team sheet who are aged over 21 and have also made forty or more senior appearances.

Game format

The format of the competition is 3 group games against, in this case, Exeter, Swindon and Arsenal U21 with the winners progressing to the regionalised knockout stages. Reading are in group SG (South, group G). As I recall it's 3 points for a win 2 points for a winning draw and 1 point for a losing draw (a drawn game goes to penalties after 90 minutes).

Referee

Carl Brook

Previously...

Nothing known

Historically

There's previous history as the only cup game played between the clubs before was in the same competition back in February 1993 at St James' Park when Reading went out 4-2 on penalties in their first ever shootout defeat in a game.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Looking forward to going to this one after missing the league game.

I'd make 6 changes from Saturday

In starting 11: CBC, Mbengue, McIntyre, Carson, Craig and Tuma

Out from Saturday: Button, Yiadom, Mola, Savage and Ballard

Bench: Pereira, Yiadom, Abbey, Rushesha, Savage, Vickers, Wareham

So four of our outfielders must be be drawn from:

Yiadom, Abbey, Bindon, Mola, Savage, Hutchinson, Azeez, Knibbs, Ballard, Ehibatiomhan, Mbengue, Vickers, Carson, McIntyre, Holmes, Dean, Wing, Guiness-Walker, Mukairu.

:?:

That seems doable!

For me:

.....................Boyce-Clarke
Abrefa, Holmes, Mbengue, Carson
Elliot, Craig, Rushesha, Mukairu
.................Vickers, Azeez

Edited for Camara being injured

Shame we have to be in this awful cup at all, but that's the price of relegation.

The result doesn't matter. Rest as many players as possible so we don't break the rules and get fined then use it as the other clubs with category one status use it, to gove experience of mens football to the youngsters. Give the likes of Dorsett and Craig a run out.

Just spotted we are limited a little to what we can rotate

We need to select 4 qualifying players - either having started the last game, had 40 or more first team starts (not for us I don’t think) or in top 10 appearance makers for the season

So maybe that’s 4 of

Dean, McIntyre, Wing or Smith, Knibbs, Ballard, Savage, Holmes, Mola I reckon

I can almost certainly see us starting Dean, McIntyre & Holmes (or 2 of them at least) that covers at least 2 of the 4 qualifying players.

I think we may go with something like:

CBC
Abrefa Dean Holmes Carson
Mukairu Rushesha Wing (if fit - else Craig) Azeez
Wareham Vickers

With Dean, Holmes, Mukairu and Azeez being the 4 qualifying players. Also wouldn't surprise me if we see Pereria over CBC to give him minutes.

Think Ian mentioned it looking through, wondered what he was talking about there

Would be a good game for NGW - think he’s injured though

Guess it’s not too difficult to do. Think Ballard will get a start. Dean. McIntyre and Mukairo would be a good shout. Maybe Mola

Mola would make sense if they feel he needs the minutes, which he probably does - it seems that he has been brought in to be the #1 on the left back role, which is fair and gives Carson a chance to continue learning his craft with mins off the bench and the odd start.

Most of our squad qualifies, I think it would be harder NOT to play 4 who qualify.

Abrefa, Strickland, er..., er...
Rushesha, Craig, Senga, Tuma
Er..., er...

Yeah true. Dorsett counts of course. Senga is off on loan

Up front Wareham, Clark, Clarke wouldn’t. Carson don’t think does. Elliott wouldn’t. So it’s slightly limiting but not a lot

Pretty sure Carson's in our top 10 appearees this season. 2 in the cup and about 4/5 in the league. 9th or 10th.

Like that. Think Holmes should play and sad Abrefa has vanished but not surprised.
