MATCHWATCH : Shrewsbury Town (a)

by Sutekh » 07 Nov 2023 22:19

When : Saturday November 11 2023, 3pm
Where : New Meadow, Oteley Road, Shrewsbury, SY2 6ST
Capacity : 9,875

After achieving their first point since the end of SEPTEMBER, the walking dead's shambles of a team now face a trip to Shrewsbury's new ground in an effort to reverse the utterly appalling run of NINETEEN league games on the road with ZERO wins earning a whopping TWO points. Still sporting a 100% away record of 7 defeats from 7 away league games Reading have a real challenge ahead, not to mention being handicapped by both points deductions and their management.

Shrewsbury are 19th, the heighths of which Reading can only dream. Form for the Shrews is 2 wins from the last 5 and 3 defeats in the last 3, so a team in form almost as wretched as Reading. One helpful factor in this one though, as Reading look to avoid completing a full 12 months without an away league win, is the paucity of goals for the Shropshire outfit having scored just 6 in the league to date (the last of which arrived 3 games and 3 weeks ago in beating Derby 1-0).

Reading's injury list really comprises just the out of favour Ejaria and the perma-crocked McIntyre, while Mbengue will complete his 3 match suspension and Savage will serve his 1 game ban prize for being the first to reach 5 yellows. It is also hoped Mola will continue to be omitted.

Referee

Marc Edwards

Previously

25 Jan 20 > Reading 1-1 Cardiff City (FA Cup)

Historically

The last meeting in Shrewsbury was a 2-1 win for Reading back in October 1991 at Gay Meadow, one of 26 shared season between the clubs. Reading won just 5 league games at Shrewsbury and have lost 14 so a bit of a graveyard for the biscuitmen overall.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Going to this one to see if we indeed make it a whole oxf*rd year without an away league win.

Of course we are going to lose.

It would be nice if we could just get out noses in front in an away game for the first time since that Hull game though.

Hutchinson’s 5th booking of the season last night- as well as Savage. Both suspended on Saturday ?
Edit Hutchinson might be 4 league and 1 FA Cup

Can you ever truly trust someone called Marc with a C at the end? The answer is no.

If roles were reversed, it would be typical Reading to lose at home to a team bottom of the league without an away win in a year.

When are we going to face a team with their "typical" moment? Typical Shrewsbury? Typical Wycombe?

Shrewsbury don't score many goals though, so potentially a chance if any in this game to end our run.

I'm amazed Hutchinson has got to November without 10+ bookings.

But we haven't kept a clean sheet in the league since 30th September so....

Nailed on the Shrews get a hatful of goals.

I have given up my ticket for this one, as for the time being I have had enough.

I'm hoping for a repeat of our last away win.

Having looked at the table though, if our advantage is Shrewsbury don't score many goals, Shrewsbury will be thinking this is their opportunity, considering we have the joint worst defence in the league...

If the Shrews get a hatful of goal Selles should be fired into orbit.

According to the Reading FC app, we are playing against Shrewsbury at the SCL Stadium in the FA Cup this weekend!

Have the media team assumed it's a cup game because someone told them we won't get any points?

tbh I'm not sure that holds for away games - attendances are booming and getting tickets is becoming more and more of an issue for the casual fan.

The irony is attendances might be up on last year given home was about the same if not up on last year to start the season, and away attendance is up.

The stats say attendances are up, but from going to games, the actual number of people in the stadium looks considerably lower.

Last night's crowd was given as about 11800. Take away 2800 from Bristol, and that's 9000 Reading fans. I doubt there were many more than 6000 Reading there in reality.
