MATCHWATCH : Wycombe Wanderers (a)

by Sutekh » 20 Nov 2023 20:10

When : Saturday November 25, 3pm
Where : Adams Park, Hillbottom Road, High Wycombe, HP12 4HJ
Capacity : 10,000

Another game away from home and the 21st attempt to win one in over a year. Selles takes his failing plans and desperation to darkest Buckinghamshire for a real derby atmostphere in an attempt to define which club is most successful and kicking the round plastic thing into the net things at either end of the ground. At least he can't do worse than the previous eight attempts to win an away league game this season.

Wycombe are 13th and on a run of ZERO wins from the last 5 league games so a visit from Ruben's charity is probably just what the doctor would order for them at the moment. Strikers Luke Leahy and Dale Taylor have scored 8 between them this season which is more than the whole of the Shrewsbury squad had managed before charity FC rolled up there last time out and we all know how that wreckage of a game worked out. Set piece threat is also available with Joe Low getting 3 from defence so far, then there's the biggest threat - Garath McCleary - who I'm sure, when given the opportunity, will take great delight in stuffing a few in to make up for the cr@p way cr@p managers treated him at the end.

No Ejaria or McIntyre while Mbengue sits out the final game of his ban. Savage returns after his ban and we won't find out who else failed to survive the 2 weeks off until Saturday.

Referee

Craig Hicks

Previously

Historically

This will be the 6th league game at Wycombe between the two clubs. So far Reading have won twice and lost twice.

  2. Ring/text a mate for updates
  3. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  4. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Wonder which randoms will get a game and what formation he’ll dream up before we lose this one

Sounds like we are playing some sort of 4-1-4-1 nowadays so maybe. Don’t know what he’ll go for but suspect the usual favourites will be picked

Maybe something like this?

Button
Yiadom Holmes Abbey NGW
Craig
Vickers Knibbs Savage Azeez
Smith

Perreira Carson Ehibhatiomhan Mukairo Dean Binden Elliott

Probably missing a load of similar standard players. Is Camara still ill?

Surely it's got to be Elliot over Knibbs in a team like that?

There was an article on tilehurst end about how much more involved Knibbs has been in that position which was interesting

Caveat I didn’t watch the games but it sounded convincing :)

Would that include 'Taxi for Terry' when a few of us piled over to Poxford and we got spanked 3-0?

Think Dai had a bet on that we'd go a whole year without winning away (what do you think that note said in the Shrewsbury game?) We've done it now so we'll go and win this one.

I look at our squad and our best/better players and i really struggle to see how the coach picks his team? still loads of square pegs and hole's that don't fit! Surly you have to play to the players strengths?
Azeez and Knibbs don't really cut it as wide men, in fact i believe knibbs preferred position is CAM? As for Azeez, i really don't know any more!!
I've mentioned 5-3-2 to help the defense and to bulk up the midfield and also to allow for the lack of natural wingers and to play with two up top plus Yids and NGW are better at WBs than full backs in my opinion.

4-2-3-1 Seems to be the formation of choice these days and could also work! Maybe something along these lines:

Button

Yids Holmes Abbey NGW

Craig Mbengue

Elliot Vickers Wing

Smith

Holmes has to be back in defense and Craig as DM as i love his workload and overall play plus i really think Mbengue has to be in the side and his raw pace and combative style of play really suits the DM position.
Elliot has to be in the team and for some reason i really think Vickers would make a better CAM than a striker and could cause chaos in that position!! and i prefer Wing to Knibbs as his all round play is better. Finally, it has to be Smith as the lone striker with Vickers just tucked in behind.

We won't get any of these but it was fun being coach for a few minutes :D :D

Wing's like first midfield name on the team sheet!

Not sure on Mbengue's suspension, but if he's available (I think he has one game more?)

......................Button
Yiadom, Mbengue*, Abbey, Dorsett
.......................Craig
..Vickers..Wing....Savage....Knibbs
.......................Smith

Subs: Pereira, Bindon, NGW, Azeez, Elliott, Ehibhatiomhan, Ballard.

*Holmes if still suspended.

Yep Mbengue one more game I believe. True on Wing, he’d definitely start.

Dorsett would probably be very upset to be dropped.

Get some results and confidence back and we could go a bit more attacking.

I just think we need to focus on being solid in midfield and defending at the back until we start picking up points...

Win a few games and maybe we can transition into more:

Savage isn't creative enough to play there. Swap him with Elliott and I like that team.

I look at that team and think we shouldn’t be oxf*rd bottom of League One.

Elliott is soft as a Mr Whippy and has no league goals or assists, and fewer key passes per game than Savage. Who has 2 goals and an assist. And Savage is much stronger defensively.

We need to stabilise and stop losing. Elliott can prove himself off the bench and ease into the side once we're done constantly folding like toilet paper.

This +1 our midfield is pretty skillful but if you look at Vickers, Wing, Savage and Knibbs they'll all get run over by a standard lower league midfielder. We need that midfield general who can stabilize and dominate play much like Sidwell/Harper in Coppells team. I know we cannot just go out and get a midfielder of their quality but there will be plenty of midfield enforcers in the lower leagues.
