Next 7 league games

by WestYorksRoyal » 29 Nov 2023 09:12

Tricky league run coming up; the next 5 are against top 10 sides plus Wigan who are looking handy. Before Carlisle, I said 12 points from 8 would represent a sustained impact worthy of more time. It's now 9 from 7. Looking at the fixtures, my guess would be:

Barnsley (H) 7th - D
Oxford (H) 3rd - L
Lincoln (A) 9th - L
Wigan (H) 14th - W
P'Boro (A) 5th - L
Cheltenham (A) - D
Exeter (H) - W

That's actually 8 which would be okay. Think Oxford's change of manager is good timing for us. It's probably the hardest run of games to predict, I feel like we're a bit of a wild card at the moment.

Such is the state of the team at the moment, you could make a case for us winning any of those games or losing most of them. I think how we perform in the 2 upcoming cup games may play a part but I do feel there is potential for a decent run coming up and we have competed with and beaten top sides already, so see nothing to fear. I am going with:

Barnsley (H) 7th - D
Oxford (H) 3rd - W
Lincoln (A) 9th - W
Wigan (H) 14th - L
P'Boro (A) 5th - L
Cheltenham (A) - W
Exeter (H) - W

So W 4 D 1 L 2 - 13 points and up to about 19th.

Often when a team breaks a long run of not winning home/away, it is followed by a decent improvement as the weight is lifted, so I think we will pick up a couple of quick wins. As I say though, this is without confidence and we could easily go W 2 D 1 L 4 as well.

I'm sticking to pre Carlisle prediction.

Beat them, then winless in 5 in the league. Call it 2 draws 3 defeats.

The others are too far ahead with the prospective takeover going on.

Without the points deductions, Wigan would be 9th (on goal difference).

Yeah I'm not really sure what to expect from a lot of these games. We could quite easily turn over Barnsley, Oxford and Lincoln for example, but also quite easily lose all 3 as well. I'd like to think that Exeter and Cheltenham are games we should be targeting wins in and that we can pick up another couple from the rest.

I wouldn't like to guess what games we will win, draw or lose although if we can come out of these fixtures with W3 D2 L2 (11 points), then that's an extremely good return. Even W2 D2 L3 isn't a disaster.

If Eastleigh v Reading doesn't produce a winner then the Oxford game will be postponed again.

What if Oxford v Grimsby doesn't produce a result?

Oxford will be forced to play twice on the same night as we are the only club in the Royal County so can force them to. We also get to pick their team.

I am going for a fairly optimistic set of results, but suspect IR may well be right.

Barnsley (H) 7th - W
Oxford (H) 3rd - W
Lincoln (A) 9th - D
Wigan (H) 14th - W
P'Boro (A) 5th - L
Cheltenham (A) - W
Exeter (H) - W

I think the run will heavily depend on the next league game, if we beat Barnsley then we really may get a good run going, a defeat puts masses of pressure on a local derby (assuming it happens) and could see us slip back again.

Potentially playing Oxford at the right time.

Their new manager, who is a legend at their club so will get loads of opportunity before they sack him. Has started with a loss and a draw.

Lets hope they keep that form up!!

I don't think we'll lose to Oxford actually. I think they'll come at us and we do well when teams do that. But that's a tough set of games in December. Cheltenham is a must not lose.

8-9 points would be fine
