WestYorksRoyal Seen a replay of the first. Button can definitely save it. He takes a step towards the middle of the goal when the shot is taken, meaning he can't get remotely close to it. Must be time for Pereira soon?

Haven’t seen the highlights but the shot got a massive deflection to wrong foot him. Didn’t really blame him on that. The third though? Seemed to beat him in the middle of the goal on first impression

Also thought the first took a deflection. Was right behind the 3rd, great hit - don’t think anyone is saving that. Load of swerve on it.

Exactly how I saw it
But he shouldn't have been beaten at the near post for the second

Hound
windermereROYAL Shrews have scored 26 goals in 34 games . 6 against us. Azeez was so poor in the 2nd half, his crossing was atrocious.

They actually looked half decent coming forward I thought. Their RW was good. Maybe we just made them look good

Bloxham? Yep looked decent and a really good strike for the 3rd

Thought they looked threatening when attacking. Very strong and direct. Mainly at the start and just before half time. They didn't really try much outside of that. Didn't need to.

yuomi First and third aside, how many times is that now that Button's been beaten at his near post? He really should have seen some sort of consequence after Pompey, but today really ought to be the one that seals (at the very least) some time away from the first team.

Agree its 3 (being kind) goals he's cost us in last 3 games....I guess the back up is worse in the eyes of the management.

I'd like to see CBC given a go but its probably wrong time in a relegation fight.

Todays consolation being….a few months ago at 0-2 down, we would’ve gone on to lose 4-0.

FWIW, A few players not on their game today, but hell, better days to come.

Will watch the replays but felt well positioned to see from East Stand, and currently don't agree with those who say it took a deflection. Whilst perhaps not agreeing with Ady W who said that he (Ady) could have headed that off the line, thought it was extremely poor goalkeeping from Button at the time.

I wonder how bad Periera must be to not get given a chance. Button has cost us at least three goals with his mistakes over the past three games, IMO he is poor in the air and fails to command his six yard box, let alone his area.

Fully agree with that. The team showed a great deal of character to come back from the two early goals conceded the way that they did.

For all the criticism of Button, not entirely justifed for me, we could still have won the game with a small degree of composure.

Instead it was just a smorgasbord of individual errors, from miscontrolling the ball, to poor passes, to poor decisions, to not learning how to pick out a player in the blue and white shirt when in the box.

Also pretty criminal was how we switched off as half time approached, as if it was 'job done' and would be a formality to go on and win.

Unfortunately we have a young team, and young players are prone to these sort of mistakes. I actually though Shrewsbury were one of the better teams we've seen at home this season. Admittedly that's not saying a lot in a very poor division, but they broke well when they attacked, and seemed pretty organised.

Dreadful 2nd half.
Back to earlier in the season.
Couldn’t control the ball , pass it and the final ball was terrible.

Obviously, a disapointing result.

Although he could have done better for the first goal, it wasn't Button's fault. The referee wasn't perfect, but he was OK, and it wasn't his fault. Mola was nothing like as bad as some people seem to be suggesting, it wasn't his fault. Not Wing, nor Azeez, nor Selles. And yes, Binden made an awful error for their second, but it wasn't his fault either.

Shrewsbury scored two worldies, scrapped and scraped, and no one can realistically say that they didn't deserve to win. Hats off to them.

In the end, we're not as good as we perhaps thought, and not as bad as we might think after today. We're a lower half League 1 team learning the ropes. Survival looked unlikely before Christmas, and now seems likely, even if we wobble a bit on the way. We should maybe remember that.

Shrewsbury were terrible and were dominated for all but the first 5 minutes of the match. They didn't deserve a thing but they rightly won't care because they took the points.

Button is a bang average keeper and will have good days and bad days!! hence the word average!! however, in our current financial situation what else do we really expect?
We could throw Pereira into the mix, would he be any better, probably not otherwise he wouldn't have spent his whole career as an understudy!!
I would love to give CBC a go but at this crucial stage of the season is it really worth taking a risk on a young keeper? also probably not. We need to get over the line as quickly as possible so we then can have the luxury of giving some of our fringe players a chance to shine and see what they've got.

Thought the ref was actually pretty good first half. Good advantage on our goal. Then he just seemed to lose the plot and get worse and worse. 9 bookings were unnecessary and only 4 mins injury time when there should have been double that

2nd time I've seen Reading this season. 1st was Cheltenham away. My view overall was Reading were good. Just a freak start to the game undid them. 2nd half, you have to give credit to the opposition, as they got their tactics right. Having said that, we still dominated and could have scored with a bit of luck. The general trajectory is upwards. You will always get these frustrating results.

For me he hasn't really dropped many total clangers at all, albeit I managed to miss all the goals today.

He also hasn't pulled off many brilliant saves either.

He's just a bit meh. Was surprised when all the vitriol started about him after Pompey, seemed to come from nowhere.

Not deserving of any “vitriol” but even the Pompey fans last week said he “cost us”

Not too many outstandingly brilliant keepers play at this level…yep….meh

We are where we are, he is where he is

I think the Tilehurst End did a piece looking at his stats, and basically he's bottom quartile in the league for basically every meaningful measure. So this isn't just a case of the level we're at now, he's a poor L1 keeper. Now perhaps that's all we could do in the summer thanks to Dai.

I'm not convinced Southwood was the answer, but surely he'd have stayed had Bowen et al known about available options.
