Biscuit goalie Only Cheltenham (50 max) can catch us but only if we lose both our final games (one of which is Burton) but we have a superior GD
(BA away, Imps at home, Peterborough at home, Stevenage away)
Port Vale can only get 49 max ( WW at home, BW away, Cam at home )
Fleetwood can only get 46 max
Carlisle

So basically we're mathematically safe - barring a points deduction.

I've heard only one of Burton and Cheltenham can catch us. Can anyone confirm?

The Burton v Cheltenham game is on Tuesday night.

A draw between them will mean we are mathematically safe (barring any further points deductions).

If Cheltenham don't win they can't catch us, if Burton lose they can't catch us. It's not possible for Cheltenham to win and Burton not lose. They can't both catch us.

I'm amazed people still don't get it.

Well it took the BBC the best part of an hour to cotton on and that's with Ady having access to social media during and after the game and even then I wasn't convinced that Dim understood

So to make it clear to everyone, one last time. Reading cannot be relegated this season, unless the FL take more points off of them. The club has been mathematically safe since 5pm yesterday.

These are the remaining games for Reading, Port Vale, Cheltenham and Burton....

Tue 16 April

Burton v Cheltenham
Port Vale v Wycombe

Sat 20 April

Bolton v Port Vale
Burton v Reading
Cheltenham v Lincoln

Tue 23 April

Cheltenham v Peterborough

Sat 27 April

Fleetwood v Burton
Port Vale v Cambridge
Reading v Blackpool
Stevenage v Cheltenham

and the bottom of L1 is currently:

17 Reading P44 Pts50 GD-1
18 Cambridge P42 Pts46 GD-20
19 Shrewsbury P43 Pts46 GD-30
20 Burton P43 Pts41 GD-25
========================
21 Port Vale P43 Pts40 GD-30
22 Cheltenham P42 Pts38 GD-23
23 Fleetwood P43 Pts37 GD-24
24 Carlisle P44 Pts30 GD-36

I pointed it out on the match thread with the match at 1-1 with an "As it stands...." post just after Exeter went 3-2 up.

I spent half the afternoon working out the permutations as a goal went in in any of the 4 games.

Ok, so if Burton v Cheltenham is a draw, we’re down?

No you numbskull! If it's a draw then obviously we go into season extra time.

I was the one who tweeted Ady to set him straight on air (after IR had set me straight on here). He needed convincing.

Of course the magic number is still 1, it's just that we know that it's covered

We've already achieved the number of points needed to ensure that four teams finish below us. Therefore it is 0!

But zero factorial equals one, so Silver Fox is correct.

Magic number doesn't take into account teams playing each other - it is just a simplistic guide to how close you are to achieving a goal.

We know we have achieved it but for "completness" the game between Burton and Cheltenham has to happen for that final point to drop away. It is not and never has anyone ever claimed for it to be a scientific process, just a "fun" guide.

Depends what your definition of magic number is. If you define it as how many points do you need to stay up, then we have achieved it.

You get to decide whether it includes people playing each other or not. You're not constrained by any rules on the matter!

No you're not, but as IIRC the person who brought the joy of Magic Number to this fair portal in the first place, the rules as originally defined are as SF stated - the number is 1 but we know that will be accounted for tomorrow.

I'd say the magic number is still 1. It's not the same as being mathematically safe and obviously it will drop to zero tomorrow.
