MATCHWATCH : Northampton Town (h)

by Sutekh » 26 Mar 2024 08:34

When : Friday March 29 2024, 3pm
Where : SCL Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Easter time sees Reading pitched up in two anti-local derbies. Instead of what you'd logically hope for (games v Wycombe and Pompey) the players and fans have Northampton and then a trip to Bolton to which to look forward.

First up is Northampton who are pretty much as safe from relegation as you can get if you're not troubling the promotion fight. The Cobblers are 11th on 53 points, their issue this season is one of not turning more of their defeats into draws. Form currently isn't exactly the best it's been for them either with their 1-0 home win over Derby on Saturday being their first win anywhere in 6 games and, therefore, only 5 points recovered from those 6 games.

Midfielder Sam Hoskins is again leading scorer with 15 so far to add to his 22 league goals from last season, therefore it's fairly obvious where the threat will come from given his haul is 1 more than both forwards Keiron Bowie and Mitch Pinnock have managed between them this season. Expect also the that the matcch may see the return of Liam Moore who should be up for the game and no doubt his determination may well spread throughout the Northampton mindset so if he does play perhaps it might be best to give him a warm welcome to try and dampen that effect a little rather than promoting it with the expected booing.

Only Yiadom (suspended) and Holmes (injured) are likely to be missing so Selles should have more or less a full squad of players to pull from - perhaps even the forgotten Monlouis might get on the bench.

Previously

Nothing

Historically

This is the 45th season shared with the Cobblers with league games going back to 1921. Since then Reading have won 30 and drawn 10 home games but Reading have NOT beaten Northampton at home in any competition since a 3-0 League Cup win in 1993, since then they've played 4 games in all competitions and managed just 3 draws (and one of those was ultimately lost on penalties). Therefore the Cobblers have never been beaten at the Mad Stad/SCL.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the Mad Stad
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Deby fans have spent a lot of time (ironically) accusing Northampton of time-wasting, S***housing, and cheating (Shout out to Gayle and Hourihane!)
However, there does seem to be some acceptance of this by Cobblers fans on their forum. Just hope we get a stronger ref than the useless git we had against Shrewsbury, whose game management was to occasionally shake his hand back and forth nothing else. Need to start quickly and score one early on or could be a very frustrating afternoon.

Sounds like they haven't changed much in the last 20+ years as that's how they played against us in the last league game between the two teams.

What reception are we expecting for Moore? I'll probably go with polite applause.

Is this the third home game in a row where an ex-player has turned up for some polite applause - McCleary, Morrison and now Moore

Northampton reporting injury doubts over 3 of their defenders; Liam Moore, Aaron McGowan and Jon Guthrie.

Looks like only Bindon of our regular first team players has played in the internationals so touch wood all will come back fit.

Fear a heavy defeat in this one.

Expecting a close game, a draw or narrow victory. We do seem to up our game a bit against the better teams. Any result which betters Cheltenham and Port Vale will do nicely as another game chalked off the season.
However, with Bolton coming up on the Monday a defeat would be pretty bad and may drag us back into the mix.
Expecting a decent crowd again as Northampton should bring +1000 and it being a holiday weekend this has the potential to be the biggest of the season to date.

Looking forward to catching this one live with a bit of positivity in the crowd.

Expect defeat to keep up my 100% live record this season.

They'll be some morons who actually cheer and clap Liam Moore today. That's how lame some of our fan base are.

He deserves dogs abuse.

And if not, he’ll pick one up after about 15 minutes.

I reckon it will be around 15,000 again today. Could well be higher depending on how many Northampton bring (I agree it will be at least 1,000).

Moore out for them which is a relief. The consensus on their preview podcast is that now he's gained fitness you can really see his quality at this level. And you always fear ex players with a point to prove.

Liam Moore bottles it again. Bottle job for us over many seasons and now a bottle job for Northampton. Sack of shite.
